EGL Throwback Thursday: August 2009
This week's TBT is a little bit more recent than the others: August 2009. I chose this month because it happened to be the month that Baby San Francisco opened up, and with the news of BtSSB NYC on the horizon, I thought it would be fun to look back at the first time a Lolita brand shop opened in the US!
The Baby opening in the US was a huge deal, so much bigger than any one to come after that because it was the very first brand shop to open up. Because of this EGL was in a tizzy over it, and then continued to tizzy about it after the fact with photos after photos after photos after photos. There's also this text writeup about the day that talks about how the wait in line to purchase things was 2 hours long! This post about people's fears about what it would mean now that there was a brand store in the US is particularly hilarious. Around this time Bodyline was doing a bunch of their shady contests and people really enjoyed trolling the design contests with weird sexual designs. This "Maiden's Rose" print was one of those. Bodyline also had it's infamous Mr Yan So Furious sale this month and the world got to see Mr. Yan in action! One of their first real prints, Love Nadia, also came out.
Another thing that got EGL in a tizzy back in August 09 was the fact that there was a Lolita on What Not To Wear. So many posts were made about this! All with dozens and dozens of comments! The only other one I'll share though is this one asking people if they would agree to go on a show like that.
Among all these things, this was also the year of the InnoSera con, which was a small BJD and Lolita convention that had a BtSSB fashion show.
This was right at the peak of the OTT Sweet Lolita boom, and a lot of people were having very mixed feelings about that! Check out this post asking where the elegance in Lolita was, and this one bemoaning the loss of Gothic Lolita.
Does anyone remember the old Sophia banner mascot? In Aug 09 EGL voted on whether or not to get rid of her and allow some more banner options.

Decoden was king, and just about everyone was making their own deco'd everything! This was also probably the heyday of Daily_Lolita and there were discussions on whether or not to keep all outfit photos off EGL.
Lolita in 09 wasn't really immensely different then than it is now, just the trends are a little different, but you can see what sort of idols in the fashion people had in this post.
