The "Purpose" of Indie Brands

I've seen a lot of different attitude towards indie brands, and recently, I've seen multiple counts of people flat out insulting indie designers in real life and online because something wasn't to their taste, or they thought they could do better, or whatever.

That said, I'm curious what people's opinions of indie brands are? Why do they exist? What purpose do they serve in the community? And do they exist to serve a purpose in the community, or is that a side effect of their existence?

I'm also curious about indie designers. Why do you create? What is it that you are trying to bring to the community? What are your personal goals with your indie brand?
