Is lolita REALLY dying?

Every so often I see posts floating aaround on LJ, Tumblr, and so on saying that lolita is "dying" and that it's no longer as popular in Japan any more. I even see people claiming that the brands are on the verge of collapse! Since lolita is a very niche fashion, I guess that would make sense. Most really extreme fashions, like ganguro and himegal, don't seem to stick around for too long in Japan.

At the same time, I feel like I see more lolita than ever. Brands are opening up stores here, lolita is becoming more popular worldwide, and there's an absolutely insane demand for items from the "big brands" that just wasn't there even a few years ago.

I'm not sure what to make of this apparent contradiction. Is lolita dying in Japan as it becomes more popular elsewhere? Is it still popular in Japan but just shifting or becoming more mainstream? What do you think? Do you think the fashion would ever truly "die"?
