a plus-size, mostly handmade wardrobe

I did this last year and apparently forgot how much time and energy it took wanted to do it again since I did make some changes to my collection in the past year, and I like having a record of where I am and where I want to go.  My style didn't really change too much (I still tend towards otome or toned down sweet or classic) and my wardrobe is still mostly handmade.  But over the course of last year I sold half of my dresses, made a bunch of new ones, and quadrupled the amount of brand!  (Which means I have four brand dresses instead of one -- not as impressive when I say it like that, is it?)

I am going to cheat and use the same pictures of my closet layout as I did last year.  I haven't made any changes other than adding a few more hooks for my purses, so it looks extremely similar.
my closet, which is a hallwaymy dresser

My closet is built into the hallway between my bedroom and my bathroom.  There are hooks on one side where I hang bags (with shoes on racks under that).  On the other side, I've got my regular clothes and my lolita blouses hanging on the top pole, and Lolita skirts and dresses (folded at the waist over hangers) on the bottom pole.  Having the dresses folded like that is a bit squished, but I only have a few inches of dress-length hanging space in my closet because it also has my dresser in it. So far, my brand dresses are mostly hanging full-length on hangers elsewhere in my apartment so they don't get so wrinkly.  (But my handmade dresses are mostly machine washed and thus have to be ironed anyway.)  On top of my dresser, I keep my jewelry in trays and hanging from a tree, and my hair accessories and detachable bows in clear boxes.  (Ignore those wigs chucked in a pile -- I am taking better care of my wigs these days and they are bagged and stored in a large hatbox now.)

Okay, on to the good stuff.  All the photos link to Flickr, so if you want to see them larger, you can click on them.

Like last year I will do accessories first.  I am really, really, really into accessories.  I like bags that are shaped like things, and I like big plastic jewelry, so I tend to express that in Lolita a lot :)

Little stuff first:
ringsbrooches etc.necklaces/pendantsfuzzy things
I'll put the details on Flickr since it would be a huge rundown.  I make some stuff myself, some stuff is from Paradise Rose, Cute Plush, various etsy sellers, H&M/F21 type places, and I have a couple things from Emily Temple Cute and Innocent World. [2012 Goal: need more black jewelry but I am pretty well stocked in this department.]

Things for the head:
hair thingsflower head thingsbowshats
Again, a variety of sources.  I also didn't picture the majority of my headbows (I usually make one to match each dress I make).  In the last picture, the hats are all vintage (a collection I started last year) and the bonnet is from Excalibur Girls, bought second hand from a friend.  I have nothing to wear it with and bonnets are a very new thing for me to try, but I am excited to build an outfit around it. [Goal for 2012: make something to wear with that bonnet.]

Shoes!
bootsshoes 1shoes 2
My shoes look so dull-colored and sad in these photos.  I have a few pairs that I need to replace soon because I've worn them nearly to death.  I also have 2 pairs of the VW/Melissa shoes (not the wing ones though, man do I wish!) that I forgot to re-photograph.  [Goal for 2012: replace dead shoes and get more colors!]

And... BAGS.
Can you tell
more purses

I love bags?
more bags

silly ones?
purses shaped like things
Innocent World, Angelic Pretty, Emily Temple Cute, BTSSB, Swimmer, Milk, h. Naoto, Heart E, Meta, vintage, and various other sources.  [Goal for 2012: don't buy any more bags.]

Now clothes!  First, blouses:
BTSSB blouses
Fully shirred BTSSB blouses in white, black, and cream.  (The black has detachable sleeves, which have gone... somewhere.)

white blouses
Long-sleeved blouse from Kidsyoyo and short-sleeved from Surface Spell.  Need to get my seam ripper and remove the bows that are growing on that long-sleeved blouse like collar barnacles.

bolero and cutsew cardigan
Eyelet bolero from English Charm (has detachable sleeves that must have run off with the other detachable sleeves) and a sort of cutsew-cardigan from Surface Spell.

cardigans/boleros
Pink cardigan from Kidsyoyo and black bolero from HMHM (sorry about the bad contrast/color on this photo.)

moto jacket
Cropped velvet moto jacket from Domino Dollhouse.  This thing is awesome and I hope to wear it often this winter/spring.

I also have a ton of offbrand cardigans and "cutsews" (fancy t-shirts, really) and I am more likely to wear those with my jumperskirts than a real Lolita blouse.  But I didn't take photos of them because they are kinda plain and boring.  (I also skipped socks -- I have mostly phased them out in favor of tights; a lot of colored solids, and some polka dot, lace, etc.  And I can't show you my tights because someone will report me to whatever authority is in charge of people who have entirely too many pairs of tights.)

Now skirts and petticoats:
h. naoto frill skirt
h. Naoto skirt that I use as a petticoat.  I got this from the designer after the fashion show at ACen last year, and because of that and the fact that it has such amazing print details, this is one of my most treasured items.

dear celine petticoatcarousel skirtmetamorphose sailor skirt
Dear Celine petticoat, carousel skirt I made, and an old sailor skirt from Metamorphose.  I should note I don't really wear skirts because I feel like JSKs are much more flattering on me. [Goal for 2012: figure out how to wear skirts.]

Speaking of JSKs... here are my four!  four!  ah ah ah!  brand dresses:
metamorphose sailor dressBTSSB tartan jskmetamorphose apple dressmetamorphose candy star rabbit
Metamorphose sailor stripe, a BTSSB tartan, Meta apple print, and Meta Star Candy Rabbit.  [Goal for 2012: get more brand (aka fit into more brand).]

Also some offbrand/indie brand dresses:
megan maude bandanna print dressFanplusfriend tartan dressakane & alois dress
Megan Maude dress in a sort of bandanna print (bought second hand but it fits really well and is super well made), Fan Plus Friend velveteen/tartan dress, and Akane & Alois floral dress.

And here are JSKs I made myself (roughly in order of when I made them):

EDIT: forgot a dress, whoops.  It was in the laundry, and I guess it was last year too, so I hadn't photographed it on the dress form.  Anyway, it's made out of Emily Temple Cute fabric and there's a photo of me wearing it here.

So that means I made 9 dresses for myself last year - not bad!  I also made 3 dresses for other people.  I am slowly gaining the confidence to make dresses for people who aren't myself, as well as working on going back to school for fashion/textiles design.  It will be nice to learn how to make more than the one shape :) [Goal: make more stuff, apply to school, etc.]

Thanks for reading - 2012 will be my fifth year dressing in Lolita and I'm looking forward to all the outfits and sewing ahead!
