Oh, masters of needle and thread, any tips for this young grasshopper ?

Well, I have decided to take the plunge and take up sewing !
I love to design clothes and how wonderful it would be to be able to create my own garments.
Unfortunately, I am aware I still have a long, long way to go.
I am an absolute novice as in I have never touched a needle and thread before, haha. xD
However, I have determination and I hope that counts.
I have so many questions to ask you all I don't even know where to start...

First of all, what are the quintessential tools for the seamstress ?
So far I have :
- Sewing machine (Which brand would you recommend ?)
- Dress form
- Measure tape
- Scissors (Are there special fabric scissors ? Do you just.. cut the fabric ? Won't the edges fray ?)
- Pins

Let's move on !
Do you creative lolis draft your own patterns or use commercial ones ?
I'm actually interested in designing my own patterns, but I think that's pretty advanced.
Furthermore, I'd also need to get the basic skills such as seams, hemming, ruffles, pintucks, pleats etc.
I was thinking of borrowing a book from the library on the subject.
How did you learn all the technical requisites ?
Books, online tutorials, classes ?

And my last question~
I think I want to start with using cotton.
What kind of cotton do brands usually use ?
I'd like a thicker cotton : is it called broadcloth, twill or something else ?
If I want more flowy dresses, would I be better off with chiffon and georgette ?

Dear god, apologies for all the questions, but I must say it's quite a venture for me. xD
I'd truly appreciate any help. <3
Thanks for your precious time~
