A problem with an extremely long, tangled wig

I've bought a 120cm long wig and, as you'd expect, it has ended up extraordinarily tangled after a day's wearing...

I've attempted to comb it (from the bottom up) but as I do, the fibres higher up sort of get pushed up to form waves that just become impossible.

My mum sprayed the whole thing with anti-static stuff (the kind you use on stockings etc), thinking it may help, but it just made everything worse: the knots have become quite matted and the whole wig feels bad to the touch.

Would the best option be to wash it, and attempt to loosen the tangles with my fingers while the wig is submerged in water? I'm really stuck so if you could please provide any help... I fear I've already been too rough with it and have managed to lose quite a lot of fibres...

I really want to salvage it, but I'd like to not have to resort to cutting it shorter...
