Altering Brand

A touchy subject, brought up again.

So here's my dilemma. I have three dresses in my closet that don't fit me quite right for one reason or another, but I can't decide if I want to alter them.

I have in the past successfully altered OPs from both BABY and AP to accommodate my wide shoulders, by adding a shirred panel in place of the back zipper. I like this method, because it leaves the garment relatively damaged, except for the needle-holes, and the alteration is easily reversible.

The first problem is with my black "Pure Princess" OP from BABY. It would be easy to alter in the same way as the others. However, I am usually more sweet lolita than gothic, and it is a very elaborate dress that probably won't see a lot of use. Should I bother messing it up when I could trade or sell it for something I'll wear more?

The second problem involves two AP Jumpers, the Heart Marine and the Angelic School JSKs, and I love them...or I would, if I could wear them. Strange how most fit me so perfectly, and these don't at all! The trouble is that these are not back-zippered, so I'll have to alter them in a different way, each involving a lot more "damage" to the dresses.

The Angelic School jsk is zippered on one side, with nominal shirring in the back (apparently not enough for my ribcage). I could add a shirred panel where the zipper is, the same way I altered the other dresses, but then the dress would fit me sideways! I would have to un-stitch the dress on the other side, and possibly cut the strip at the top of the bodice.

The Heart Marine is a little shirred in the back, but actually buttons all the way down the front. There are two solutions I can think of, neither very pleasant. Similar to the other dress, I could cut open the sides under the armpits to add elastic panels, which will hurt the dress. Or, I could open the lining, un-attach the elastic in the shirring and replace it with stretchier elastic, and perhaps sew the front-buttons closed to avoid "gaps". But this idea isn't guaranteed to fit right, and I'll have done it all for nothing.

I could indeed sell or trade these two dresses for others, but I reeeally like them.

So the questions are:

Do you have any suggestions of better ways to alter these JSKs?

Do you think it would be wise to take them to a professional tailor for alterations instead?

Do you want to convince me it makes more sense to sell these things for ones that fit?
