How to learn to sew

Hi everyone! I have decided that in these rough times, it is probably more economical to make one's own lolita garments as opposed to buying brands. Still, one of my life goals has always been learning to sew. The problem is, I don't know where to start. The internet seems like a no-go to me, because I'm more of a hands-on person who likes to to ask questions. I am an art student at UGA, so I suppose the artistic experience might help me some in this pursuit. How did all of you learn to sew? Do any of you Georgia lolis know of good places to learn or tutors who could teach me? I checked the classes offered at my school, but there don't seem to be any sewing classes...Oh, and during the summer I'll be closer to the Atlanta area.

I hope I haven't done anything wrong as a newbie! I searched for posts on this topic but was unable to find anything sufficient to answer my questions. I promise I've read the rules and everything! :)
