I decided to write a review about Celga and about Crescent Shopping after using both recently.

-Celga-

For Yahoo! Japan: Bidding on an auction with Celga on either Mbok or Yahoo! Japan isn't the easiest task. You have to email the staff, wait for a reply, make a deposit and then wait. The real problem with this is you really can't bid on an item ending really soon as it will end before your email is seen (at least often-times that is the case).
Contacting the staff is easy and the process is fairly straightforward, but only being able to bid on auctions with lots of time left and not having a lot of control over bidding kind of sucks. They usually wait until the last few hours to bid which can be a little nerve wracking. One other thing is that when you request to bid on an auction you really, REALLY have to give your absolute maximum bidding amount. If a bidding war ensues and you quoted your max low, you just might lose.

Online Stores: This process is much easier than bidding on auctions. You simply fill out a form with the necessary information (store, size, color, etc) and submit. The downside is that this also takes time to be received, so if something is going to sell out really quickly you'll probably be out of luck. They also take orders for reserves which some services won't do.

Fees: Depending on what you are getting, the fees can be fairly steep. Fees depend on how much your item costs, how much it costs to ship, etc. For certain items I found Celga affordable, for others they were far too expensive.

Payment: The instructions for payment were really confusing to me, I wish they were written out in a more concise manner. I ended up paying for everything BEFORE they billed me and since an item sold out before it was obtained, I ended up with a credit to my account. After they got my items, fees and shipping totalled out I requested a refund of the credit and got it right away (with NO paypal fees attached).

Shipping: Shipping is a somewhat annoying process. You have to wait at least a week (I recommend 10 days though) and then inquire about your item(s). If they have arrived you can ask them to be shipped and once you've paid for shipping they are sent.
The package I received from Celga was well packed and arrived safely. They had marked the items down a lot on the customs declaration (which I didn't ask for) which thankfully didn't cause any problems. If you foresee problems with this, make sure you are clear that you do not want them to mark the value down when you request shipping.

Customer Service: At first I had trouble with receiving emails from the staff, my email was blocking them. So I switched emails and got their replies just fine. Answers came quickly and were helpful.

Overall: I received my stuff quickly and was happy with my purchases. I was a little frustrated with the blocked emails, the item I wanted selling out and having to do so much correspondance but it all worked out alright. If I were to use a shopping service again however, I would probably not use Celga again.

-Crescent-

For Yahoo! Japan: Bidding on Y!J is incredibly easy. They have a real-time bidding script that allows you to bid as much as you want, when you want. You have to put in a deposit which is driven by a multiplying system. Depending on how much you deposit, you can bid up to a certain amount (on multiple items if you wish).
You cannot bid on mbok or any other auction site right now, although it sounds as though they may be working on it.

Online Stores: Online stores isn't quite as easy. You have to go to the shopping BBS (which is your own private BBS on your account) and ask about an item. Generally you should put in the URL and maybe some pictures. If you ask any questions they will be answered and then you confirm the purchase and it will be added to your shopping list. From the shopping list you pay the estimate for the item and it will be ordered.

Fees: The fees here are also dependant on how much the item costs. I've found crescent to have competative prices, although depending on the price another service may be cheaper. It's best to compare with other services unless you don't really care about the fees.

Payment: Payment is quite easy, although it can be easy to overlook at first. When you win an auction, you need to go to your auction list, click the item and then click pay. Don't worry too much if you don't do this immediately after the auction ends, you put in a deposit for a reason! For auctions you have to pay the full amount, but you can request your deposit back in full which will be refunded to you very quickly.
For online shops, once your item appears in the shopping list, click on it and then click pay.

Shipping: Items that you ordered (from auctions and shops) appear on the list and you can decide which ones to ship together. You can ship things together if they were bought within 2 months of each other or you can ship things separately. Even if the items have yet to arrive, you can still ask for the items to be shipped. As soon as they arrive, it will tell you (on the pending shipment page). When the items are shipped out you are emailed with the information, including the tracking number. It defaults to EMS shipping, but you can choose other methods if you wish.

Customer Service: Since so much is automated, I didn't really have any need to correspond with anyone. The only correspondance I needed to do (so far anyway) was to inquire about an online shop order and confirm. This all happened quickly and was easy. When I inquired about the item, I received a response almost immediately and my order was placed the same day. When I requested a refund of my deposit, I received it very quickly.

Overall: Overall crescent was really easy to use and really wonderful. I really love their live bidding script, it makes it so much easier to bid on auctions. When I use a shopping service again, it will probably be crescent.

If you have any questions feel free to ask :3

I find Crescent to be pretty similar to Shopping Mall Japan except 1) Crescent doesn't mark down the value on the package; 2) SMJ only offers Y!J bidding services.
I try to avoid the Canadian customs fees when possible ^^;

Did you have to pay custom fees on either of the packages?

I didn't have to pay customs on either package. Celga marked theirs way down and Crescent did not..
I actually don't like it when people/companies mark the value down when I didn't request it. Canada Post has caught this before and charged me a LOT of money. I'd rather pay the actual customs fee then the fee the workers guessed at :(

Good review, I like how you have them both all laid out like that.

I've never used Crescent for auctions, but I used them a few times for online stores, and found the system to be quite confusing. It's basically sending messages back and forth trying to make clear to him what precisely you want and whether the item is in stock and all that. It just seems a bit awkward for me. Crescent also refuses to mark down packages, which is a problem when you have to deal with customs fees.

For Celga, there are some things that make me really comfortable with them. One is that they'll accumulate your items if you buy from more than one store/auction so that you can save on shipping. I also like that they automatically mark down packages, but I suppose this could also be bad if customs catches it. I also like that it is so simple to buy from an online site. You have pointed out the negatives, though, and I think that in the future I might consider Crescent for auctions, at least when it looks like it might be down to the wire.

Cresent do that as well. You just have to choose "put items in pending shipment" instead of "place shipping order" when you make payment, then you can stack up as much as you want from different shops. I do it all the time. :)

Yea, what you say in this post is very true.

What I don't understand is why Celga charges $10 commission for items under 10,000 and over 1,000 yen. Sure, it's a better deal than Crescent if your item is 10,000 yen since it's only a 10% charge.

However, for most small accessories like jewelry, head accessories, and socks, it's a big difference in commission where Crescent will only charge 500 yen (for items 4,000 yen and under) and Celga would still charge the $10.

I never consider buying accessories through Celga and prefer them for larger, more expensive items.

With Celga you don't need to wait for they reply. You simply write the email, send the deposit at that moment, and everything is ready. And you don't really need a lot of time, one time I found an auction with 5 hours left, and they replied me in an hour and made the bid fast, and I won <33

Nice review! It's a good idea to put titles in your review.

Just as [info]kuramew was saying, I use celga for more expensive items and for items costing at the higher end of the fee level. Also, celga marks items down, which for me (and most likely for many european lolitas), is really important because customs hit 99% of the item.

I have gone off Crescent recently - their staff is not very friendly at times. They claim to deal with after sales problems, but so far, they just skirk the responsibility (which I kind of expected anyway). Their shipping packing is terrible IMO; I have been receiving packages that are half stuffed with newspapers. It's just clothes, I don't think they need to stuff the *overly big* box with quite so much newspaper. I actually weighed the packaging & the newspaper and it was 850g!! >__<"

[info]kanashimi2

July 16 2007, 07:36:05 UTC 4 years ago

That actually happened to me with Celga. The overly large box, and huge amount of newspaper weighed about as much as what I ordered!
And I think that is why the shipping ended up being extremly high .($50!)
For clothes especially you don't need all that extra packaging.

Great review! I use Crescent Shop usually and not Celga for these same reasons. I prefer Mai for actual store bought items though as she will ring around and try to get them.

The only problem I have with Crescent is that you can't use your deposit to pay for items, you have to pay the full amount and then refund your deposit, so it tends to get eaten a bit by paypal in the process (I've lost up to $5 in fees doing this) I would suggest only putting down the very minumum deposit necessary for this reason, and then using your refunded deposit to pay for shipping.

[info]kuramew

July 16 2007, 16:38:02 UTC 4 years ago

Technically, you shouldn't lose anything from receiving a Paypal refund unless the currency you originally paid with was not in US dollars.

If, say -- Australian currency has depreciated against the dollar since the time of original payment and you receive your refund, then you would be receiving less than you initially put down.

Otherwise, Crescent is using the 'Refund' option with Paypal and there shouldn't be fees if you're using USD. Also, a way to get around not using upfront money with the deposit is to charge your deposit on a credit card via Paypal and have it refunded to that credit card afterwards. It of course, will not come from your bank account so there's really no harm in doing that.

July 16 2007, 19:06:05 UTC 4 years ago

Yeah, not using the deposit for payment was a little weird.. but I got my payment back in full. It seems they used the 'refund' option in paypal, so I didn't lose any money to fees. Same thing happened with Celga.

I just wanted to add I think Celga staff is super friendly. If something goes wrong (like one time when they shipped out only half of my order instead of all of it) they give you a discount on your stuff, and they're always nice and trying to help you (and they use smilies in their email, which for some strange reason I find very comforting :D)

For European lolis I wouldn't recommend Crescent, unless you feel like paying an additional 50% of your total in custom fees :x

I wanted to say the same. That the Celga-Staff is really friendly. I asked them a million questions before my first auction and they always replied very friendly and fast. Once My deposit didn´t arrive inb time, because the billing-staff responsible for the invoices had a week-end off ^^ But they place my bid though there was absolutely no deposit by me.
Since then I really respect Celga, because of the trust they had in me.

I have yet to use Celga, but I love Crescent! I use them for auctions, and I agree that it's awesome being able to bid until the last minute yourself. I'm not sure about shipping for others, but for me, last time I had a package sent, they sent two skirts, a headbow, and a blouse in a box half the size of most brand shopping bags folded in half! I paid no more for shipping than I would have ordering from Meta or Baby. =)

Those were good reviews. ^_^
I've always wanted to use a courier service, but i never really understood how to use it.

So...i have some questions..with Celga do you have to email thme want you want to order?
And....for both Celga and Crescent Shop, how do you give them your credit card info??

@_@;;
im so confused... =_=;;

For celga, to place a webshop order use this form: http://www.celga.com/egl/index.php?page=order

If you want to bid on an auction, look here: http://www.celga.com/order.html

I believe both only accept paypal, celga will also accept money orders, I'm not 100% sure about crescent. Paypal is really the best way to go about this as they can't accept credit cards alone.

God, I know this is so late but I'm having trouble using Crescent. I went to my auction list, clicked on the item, but there's nothing that says "pay". Am I missing something? Sorry if it is obvious.

[info]cidsa

August 7 2007, 21:06:35 UTC 4 years ago

No problem.
I believe the people who work at crescent have to activate the pay button. Sometimes they do it right after the auction ends and sometimes after the item has arrived. I believe they will send you an email, but just keep checking every day. Eventually it will show up and you can pay :3

I have a question. Is the minimum price of something you can bid on 50 USD on Crescent? My friend wants to order something that is a lot cheaper than that and we aren't sure.

[info]cidsa

January 22 2008, 17:35:12 UTC 4 years ago

No. You just have to put a deposit of 50USD which allows you to bid up to 25000yen (on one or multiple things). I've frequently bought cheap things (like 300-500yen), it's fine :3

Erm this is a late comment but does crescent charge you extra for shipping things separately?

[info]cidsa

Do you mean the items shipped to them or shipped to you?
I always stack up a number of items in pending shipment and have them all sent at once. They will charge you for every single shipment you make, whether that's one item or 50. The charges differ from shipment to shipment as it is based on weight.
They won't charge extra fees, just the basic shipping charge on the shipment in question.
