Old/'Vintage' Brand Items!
28th-Mar-2014 12:22 am
Tenma, Monster
Since March (and the old school theme) is almost over, I thought it would be kind of cool to have members share their actual 'vintage' old school lolita items that might be hanging in their closets. I've taken inspiration from this post made back in 2010 (http://egl.livejournal.com/14834148.html?page=2#), but I figured it would be a fun topic to revive since pieces are bound to have changed hands since then. So everyone, what are the oldest lolita pieces that you own? Do you guys have pieces do you have hanging in your closet that are pre-2005? Pre-2003? Show off!

I guess I could start it off by sharing an older piece in my closet. I acquired an ancient Meta jsk some months ago that I believe is from 2002. Here's a photo:

Jeez, so I don't even really know what's up with the design for the crowns in this print, but I'm a sucker for this dress anyway. :P

I think older brand pieces are incredible, they're so different from what brands are releasing now. It's great to see the progression of lolita trends through releases.

I can't wait to see everyone's older pieces!

Yeah, I think the progression is really incredible to see! I've noticed recently that the bulk of my closet is from circa 2006-2008, so I guess that moment in time just kind of took me in. :)

I have Juliette et Justine Cathedrale d'arabesque from 2002, which is one of my favourite dresses ever, I simply love the gobelin fabric and it's in excellent conditions.

I also have the Juliette et Justine Ange de musique cutsew and tote bag from 2003. They do not look like they are over 10 years old. I would love to get more older pieces by Juliette et Justine, they are all impeccable.

Wow, that's absolutely gorgeous! I adore the length and the intricacy of the pattern. I don't own much JetJ, but seeing this makes me wish I did. :)

I just started really buying this year, so I'm not even sure how many years it'd take for a piece to be considered vintage. The oldest piece I own would be this skirt from Baby. I had no idea it was 7 years old when I bought it from Closet Child; it's in impeccable condition.
28th-Mar-2014 09:49 am (UTC)
Oh, wow! I actually don't think I've ever come across that skirt before, but it's definitely cute for casual wear. :) You were lucky to have snagged it.

That's some cool Meta you have there! Gothic yet light.

As for me, the gothic part of my wardrobe tends to be older than the rest. For example, I believe my oldest dress to be that MmM nun onepiece. The label begins with a zero, so it must date from 2000. I wonder how much francs did it cost XD

There isn't much to degrade, so the piece looks preserved. On the other hand, My 2001 "Orchestra" jsk as it is often dubbed, is cracked here and there as you would expect from screen prints. It's not too obvious as a destructured look is sometimes encountered in MmM pieces.

I also have this one from 2001. But it looks brand new, the chiffon has that effect. One of you posted a stock photo on Tumblr but I still have to find the dress page on the wayback to fill an entry on lolibrary, if it hasn't been done yet.

Outside MmM, I own this Meta jsk with embroidered crosses. It's from 2003, but the fabric is so soft to begin with that it's like time cannot alter it.

After that it skips to 2005 or later…

The Moitie Nun OP and the Orchestra JSK are gorgeous. Older releases are usually appealing :)
I never knew that Meta dress is that old!! D: Thought it's like from mid 2000s.
28th-Mar-2014 11:20 am (UTC)
the oldest piece I own is this JSK from btssb, it's a 2006 release:
http://www.lolibrary.org/apparel/hem-scallop-jsk-2006
I own it in the classic old-school bxw combo. It's not among the very oldest items (there are things from the early 2000s), but it's quite meaningful to me as it represents the years in which I had just discovered lolita (maybe I had sort of an...imprinting? Because nowadays I still like differents cuts or embroidery more than border prints).
28th-Mar-2014 07:41 pm (UTC)
Ah, that's a super classic cut!

:) I think I do get what you mean, though, in terms of liking the pieces from when you got into the fashion the most. Most of my closet gravitates towards 2006-2008 pieces, which I guess was when I was just getting into the swing of things.

I have this MMM Shirred Print dress from 2003.
28th-Mar-2014 03:41 pm (UTC)
OH! I never saw that Moitie dress before. Thanks for sharing!

I love researching old school lolita, but most of my "older" pieces are from around 2008-ish because that's the style I fell in love with originally.

That said, I do have a couple pieces that are sorta older.

Angelic Pretty's Sleeping Princess Skirt in Wine and Black - 2004
http://lolibrary.org/apparel/sleeping-princess-skirt-0

Meta's Horse Print Skirt in Sax - 2004
http://lolibrary.org/apparel/horse-print-skirt

Baby's Butterfly Crown Tiara in Gold - 2004 (was this re-released, does anyone know?)

Baby's Dynamic Lolita Boston Bag in Black - 2005

Angelic Pretty's Cherry Print JSK in Sax - 2005

Innocent World's Ribbon Crown JSK in Black - 2006

Innocent World's Crown Ribbon Comb (only 1) in Brown - 2006

Angelic Pretty's Candy Headdress in red - 2006
http://lolibrary.org/apparel/candy-headdress-0

Angelic Pretty's Pastel a La Mode Skirt in Red - 2006
http://lolibrary.org/apparel/pastel-%C3%A0-la-mode-skirt

I also have a version of Angelic Pretty's Ball JSK that I haven't been able to place in time.
The one in lolibrary here is from 2004 http://lolibrary.org/apparel/ball-jsk and it's made of velveteen. Mine is all black, and a heavy, matte, fabric.

I also have this meta vest that I know nothing about with a detachable collar that has embroidered roses on it that I think might be fairly old, but I'm not sure.

And I have a few pieces from Cornet/Shotgun Wedding that I'm not sure of the date of either, but I don't really have photos. I also have a really faded old Baby cutsew I got in a mixed auction lot which I'm pretty sure is olf, but I haven't any photos of it.
28th-Mar-2014 07:45 pm (UTC)
Wow, some of these are great! That IW crown embroidery dress has been on my wishlist for a really long time, and it does indeed look stunning! Your post also reminds me that Pastel a La Mode is a lot older than I often think it being, haha.

28th-Mar-2014 05:44 pm (UTC)
Everything about that dress looks lovely, OTT in a very old-school hime way! Looking at lolibrary I think I'd pass on the huge bow at the back though; is it detachable?
28th-Mar-2014 03:38 pm (UTC)
Ooh I like this post! I love seeing older lolita pieces that others own because they're quite hard to come across. I really like that JSK you posted -- I never would have thought it was from Meta!

I'd really like to collect older Meta and Moitie since their aesthetic is my favourite. I especially love pre-2007 Moitie because I think that their designs were the best then (personal opinion).

Sorry that most of my pictures are stock pictures. Most of these dresses are at my friend's house and I wasn't able to take pictures yet.

2003 Kazuko Ogawa

2003 Moitie

I have this AP dress that I don't know when it's from. I think around 2003?

Circa 2003 Innocent World

2003 Meta

2003 Meta

2004 Meta

Circa 2005 Jane Marple

The Meta pleated dress is absolute perfection >< And I also love the first dress and the Jane Marple, stunning! I am pretty sure I have some fairly old Etc pieces, but it's hard to find out about their year of fabrication.
28th-Mar-2014 03:56 pm (UTC)
Would anyone have some tips for finding out the release year of items, when they aren't listed on Lolibrary or Hello Lace? I have some pieces I really don't know when they were released, but they look old-school (I especially like to know because not everything I thought was old-school turned out to be as old as I expected, e.g. a Meta set which in the end turned out to be from 2010).
To stay on topic here is one of my probably most oldest pieces, a "Pretty" headpiece.

I generally start with a photo of the piece, and from there I do a few things.

1. Using google translate, I run a number of possible descriptive names in japanese with the brand name through google images looking for image hits.

So, say for the one you posted, I'd try twirling heart Angelic Pretty, Angelic Pretty Heart Headdress, Angelic Pretty Heart Lace Headdress, etc, etc.

Anytime you find an image of the same piece, or a piece that could be from the same collection, you open it up in a new tab. Then you check the whole page for clues about the time. If it's with other items, you know it's as old or older than those items. If it's on a blog, it's as old or older than the time stamp.

A variation on this for semi modern items is to jump to a blog for the brand, and do an image search restricted to the brand. This works best for brands that blog photos a lot. Kerashop blogs are useful for those that don't.

2. If that turns up nothing, sometimes I'll got to poupee girl and page through the whole category it would be in under the brand from the oldest piece forward until I bump into the piece, then I know it's as old or older than that.

3. Check through all of the GLBs, I use stylistic cues to make a general guess and then just go straight through until I find something from the series.

4. Open up the brand's site in the wayback machine. Find the category. Pick a relevant date based on style cues, step forward or back (it depends on the piece. Some things I'm like "this can't be older than x" or "it can't be newer than y" that determines the direction I go) until I find it.

This is my oldest distinct-looking piece (I still have a few random blouses and solid skirts that are older, but I sold most of my sweet lolita prints years ago):

I think this is from 2003, maybe 2004. The other "old" pieces in my wardrobe are from 2006/7 (AatP Pirate Alice, Meta Berry Stripe, IW Emblem, etc)
28th-Mar-2014 07:59 pm (UTC)
Oh, wow! This is something I can totally see myself wearing. :)

Yeah, I'll admit I have a ton of Baby from circa 2006-2007 (She is Sleeping, 3 colorways of Angel's Window, etc.), probably because I like their embroidery and/or fairytale prints.
28th-Mar-2014 04:39 pm (UTC)
My oldest is Baby's Alice & Bambi in beige from 2004. It's one of my favorite pieces.

Oh man, bambi is one of my most sought after prints! I missed the OP two or three times, and I have yet to find it again. :C

I have this: http://lolibrary.org/apparel/shirring-sundress-polkadot Angelic Pretty JSK from 2003. Its still in decent condition. Unfortunately the lace is starting to yellow and show its age so I'm hoping to be able to brighten it up. Otherwise its held up really well!

Oh, wow! I actually have a jsk that looks a whole lot like this from Atelier Pierrot/Carina E Arlequin this that someone once mistook for old AP. :) Yours does look to be in pretty good form, though!

28th-Mar-2014 07:21 pm (UTC)
I have this JSK from BTSSB (released 2004) There is also a matching caplet but sadly I haven't found it anywhere

Oh, I love this jsk! I think the print is really lovely. I wish you luck in finding the matching capelet!

I recently acquired my oldest piece to date, a Victorian Maiden JSK from 2001

VM Roses and Birds Velveteen JSK

I was pretty surprised when I found out about the release date because I think it's really quite modern!
28th-Mar-2014 08:08 pm (UTC)
Wow, this jsk is incredible! But you're right, I would have guessed it to be circa 2006-2008, if I'd been pressed to give a response. Maybe it's the style of the screenprint?
28th-Mar-2014 09:28 pm (UTC)
One of my first lolita purchases was this solid pink AP JSK. I'm not sure which one it is, the design is similar to this one, http://lolibrary.org/apparel/ball-jsk but the lace color and material is different. The linked one is 2004 so I'm guessing this one would be around the same time.

Ah, this is so cute! I think the huge bows really take the dress up a notch :). I feel like I've seen various versions of this be released throughout the years, but I'm afraid I can't place yours exactly.
28th-Mar-2014 09:35 pm (UTC)
The oldest pieces in my wardrobe aren't really that old: Btssb's Marie Antoinette jsk in pink, and IW's Classical Angel jsk in brown, both from 2007. I think the oldest Lolita item I ever had was a Baby lucky pack jsk from 2006 or so.
28th-Mar-2014 09:38 pm (UTC)
Ah, both of those dresses are favorites of mine! I hope to own Marie Antoinette one day and I have the skirt version of the classical angel print, although I'd also like to own either the op or jsk.
28th-Mar-2014 09:35 pm (UTC)
I recently acquired one of my all-time dream dresses, Mary Magdalene's Fraise Sleeve OP, from 2004.
Sadly doesn't fit me yet, I'll have to lose some weight this summer. Next to it is a dress from ModCloth - I think they make a cute pair! <3

Wow, they most certainly do! I think the all-over print works really well with these sleeker/smoother dress cuts.

At 15 years old, my Meta Antique Bouquet High Waisted OP from 1999 is the oldest piece I own. I actually consider it the crown jewel of my closet.
afds
I also have an unidentified velvet Meta dress which I'm assuming it's from some time between 2000 and 2004.
aaaa
Lastly, my favorite pair of shoes, Baby's Wood Sole Shoes with Rose Corsage from 2006.

Im pretty sure you just trumped everyone for oldest piece with that meta op!
29th-Mar-2014 03:09 am (UTC)
I have an old Angelic Pretty dress that I got back in 2008, although I am pretty sure the style dates back a few years before that. I haven't really worn it much, but here it is, and I still have it hanging in my closet.

Ah, how classy! The colorway makes you think this is like the epitome of old school <3. Hmm, I've seen a lot of dresses with similar cuts/styles, so I'm having a hard time placing a year on it.

Meta - Window Print 2003

Meta - Berry Stripe 2006

:D
29th-Mar-2014 07:39 am (UTC)
Oh man, both of these dresses have been on my wishlist forever!! I think window print in particular is fabulous. :'D

I totally missed out on grabbing window print OP from cc some months ago (I think it was like 6,000-7,000 yen?), and I'm still hoping it'll pop up again.

Darling outfit with the Meta Berry Stripe too, by the way!
