Updated Compiled List - What Can / Can't be Washed
27th-Mar-2014 08:59 am

So I noticed that the old thread hasn't been updated in a long while, and thought I would compile the newer comments left there, plus start this up again for more recent releases. Forgive the copy-pasting from the old thread, if you are the original poster, please feel free to mail me! I have not arranged prints in alphabetical order - if you need to find a specific print, please just Ctrl+F it in the appropriate brand expansion

Please comment in the following format, any prints you've had problems with, or ones that you've had machine/hand wash successfully. I will add them to the list.
Format to post in: "Brand Print Name (colourway, cut) washing details"

French Cafe (black miniskirt) machine wash on delicate cycle ok [Here]
Chocolate Chess (brown jabot JSK) can be safely machine washed on delicate setting with cold water and regular detergent. I also machine dried it on low heat with no problem. Fairy Frill (pink OP) Machine wash with cold water and delicate cycle, hang to dry. Safe to iron. Also safe for dry-cleaning. [Here]
Sweet Ribbon Strawberry (black OP) washed in cold soapy water and laid it flat to dry and the ribbons bled. I'd imagine with all the colour ways the ribbons's would bleed too, maybe not so noticeable with the red colour way. [Here]
Holy Lantern (wine cutsew) Washed it twice in handwarm water, once with mild detergent and once with shampoo (I heard it takes out bled dye), the colour bled awfully both times and the cuffs are now a nasty shade of pink that can't be removed. [Here]
Coat of Arms Tartan (switching JSK) handwashed in lukewarm water with mild detergent. Do note that you might need to brush the velvet back to one side after washing, and if you hang it to dry (like me) the clips used will leave weird indents in the velvet. They disappear if you scratch the velvet loose and then brush them back to one side. Socks and headbow of the same series can be washed as well, same detergent and lukewarm water. [Here]

Lyrical Bunny Party (Lavender, special set JSK) The red from the strawberries bled a bit when spot cleaned. I was able to get most of the bleeding out while it was still wet, and used a fan to air it out so that it dried quickly afterwards. [Here]

General Advice
♥ Never dry clean screenprints, hand wash instead
♥ Don't dry clean things with pearls or rhinestones
♥ Always use garment bags when machine washing to prevent snagging, and preferably turn dresses inside out
♥ Spray starch on bows that can't be removed on dresses to prevent floppy-ness after washing. Spray, you arrange the bow the way you'd like, lay flat to dry and voila! you have a perky bows again!
♥ Never use Oxyclean on a lolita garment
♥ Don't just leave things soaking without checking, prints have been known to just melt off
♥ Red, black and navy tend to run more.
♥ If you want to check whether or not a dress will run, wet a small spot (in a place that is not too obvious), and then dab a white paper towel on it to see if the color runs.
♥ If you're still a little worried about colours running, always use cold water.
♥ DO NOT hang dresses in a place directly under sunlight, it will make stuff fade.
♥ DO NOT wash in warm water, not even lukewarm.
♥ If the print runs, avoid heat and dryers! Try handwashing in cold water 2-3 more times, add half a cup of vinegar to the wash. (The vinegar preserves the print and doesn't smell when you mix it with detergent)
♥ Always remove anything detachable (bows, etc) before taking to the dry cleaners. however secure they seem, dry cleaners will lose them!
♥ Always ask the cleaners if they are able to clean a dress. Some cleaners don't know how to clean velveteen.
♥ If you use stain remover, be careful when rubbing the fabric together as the friction can cause pilling.

Alice and the Pirate's Sleeping Beauty JSK in Ivory will have the red roses bleed if spot treated with water and mild detergent. These spots are due to excess dye running and are removable when soaked and handwashed with color safe bleach (if you try to remove them with regular detergent, it will only fade vs. disappear, and may cause more color runs on other flowers of JSK). The JSK can be safely handwashed normally after being washed with color safe bleach.

Innocent World Felicia Crown in Ivoryxbrown and Innocent World Venus JSK in black can both be handwashed with mild detergent.

Btssb:

-Red riding hood OP in red: The red runs a bit and will stain the white collar, embroidery and sleeves if you leave them on. It does this both in the washing machine and being hand washed, so if you do decide not to get it dry cleaned, use a color catcher sheet and don't use detergent. (Note: I've owned the OP twice and it did this a second time, even carefully hand washing with Woolite in cold water, so be careful if you happen to get your hands on this dress. Also, the wet fabric has stained the white section of the dress even just touching it after washing, so I would put the collar up while it's hanging to dry, and iron it down later )
-Red riding hood cardigan in ivory: Can be machine washed in cold water, hang to dry
-My little red riding hood jsk in black (re-release): Can be machine washed in cold water, hang to dry
-Kuma Kumya-chan's sweet chocolate scallop jsk in BrownxMint: Can be machine washed in cold water, hang to dry
-Kuma Kumya-chan's sweet chocolate tights in Dark Brown: Machine washing these in warm water slightly fades them, but hand washing them in cold water is ok. Accidentally threw in the dryer once on a low setting and it was okay.
-2014 lucky pack JSK (cherry rose) in Black and matching socks: Can be machine washed in cold water, hang to dry

AatP:

-Vampire Requiem skirt in blue: Fine to machine wash in cold water with Woolite and hang to dry.
-2012 lucky pack jsk (tartan check jumperskirt): can be machine washed on cold, but since it frays the unfinished hem less, hand washing is better. Hang to dry.

Bodyline:

-Cinderella bunny print in black: Hand washing in cold water is okay, but machine washing in warm water faded the skirt significantly. (I now have a dark grey skirt) Can be thrown in the dryer on a low setting.
-Cosmetics print: fine to machine wash in cold or warm water and dry on a low setting.

Also, just as an extra note: I put anything with lace on it in it's own lingerie bag before machine washing. You can get them at Walmart for 97 cents, and it's totally worth not ripping the lace on your brand to shreds.

Angelic Pretty
Starry Night Theater (pink strapless OP)
Hand washed utilizing shout stain remover on some old stains

My dress came to me with some old stain outlines and I was sick of staring at them. I applied Shout to the areas, let them soak, and then hand washed it in the sink with detergent and fabric softener (I know there are debates about whether or not to use fabric softener on lace)

There was minimal to no bleeding or running of the print whatsoever! :) All of the white areas remained white. There were maybe two tiny spots (size of a pin head) where the red bled down a tiny tiny bit. Overall though a very successful wash with no problems!

Baby, the Stars Shine Bright Queen's Coach (pink, JSK II) Machine wash with cold water and delicate cycle, lay flat to dry.
Angelic Pretty Canary (white, JSK), Colourful Ribbons (lavender, OP) & Fairy Frill (pink, OP) Machine wash with cold water and delicate cycle, hang to dry. Safe to iron. Also safe for dry-cleaning.

The thing about avoiding Oxy Clean is not true. It is true for the soaking solution, but the stain-removing spray is fine both on print and non-print as long as you wash the garment immediately afterwards.

I'm not sure if this is added but I just washed my Sweet Ribbon Strawberry black OP in cold soapy water and laid it flat to dry and the ribbons bled. I'd imagine with all the colour ways the ribbons's would bleed too, maybe not so noticeable with the red colour way. I'm going to try to get them out with shampoo and then rewash with vinegar.

Holy Lantern cutsew in wine- no. Washed it twice in handwarm water, once with mild detergent and once with shampoo (I heard it takes out bled dye), the colour bled awfully both times and the cuffs are now a nasty shade of pink that can't be removed.

Thanks, I've updated the list :D
3rd-Jun-2014 07:29 am (UTC)
Since then I will also add:

Baby the Stars Shine Bright Circus Tutu (navy blue, skirt) I folded it inside out inside a net bag and washed it in the washing machine on delicate with regular h/e detergent and chlorox 2 booster, cold water. A bit of the dye faded a tiny bit (I had put a couple of Shout Color Catcher papers in the washer from the start, knowing that dark blue may run. Those papers absorb the dyes that bleed into the water so they don't fade onto anything else...the papers were kinda purple), which made me panic at first and I freaked out and pulled the skirt out and rinsed it in cold water....upon checking it I realized there was no visible fading or running of the color. I think this was just NORMAL navy blue dye fade, the same thing you'd get with a nice pair of dark blue denim when washing for the first time. I put it back in the washer. The fade isn't a big deal IMO, and I will be washing again. Hanging to dry.

Angelic Pretty's Coat of Arms Tartan switching JSK can be handwashed in lukewarm water with mild detergent.
