The 'Unicorn' of Prints: Rare/Unobtainable Prints and Designs
8th-Oct-2013 04:36 pm
I'm starting to get the impression that lolita pieces are like cars; the really popular ones will fade into obscurity for a while before either disappearing into used lots or re-surging to new heights at 5 times their initial value. The used market can be very fickle, after all, and sometimes it's years and years after someone sells their slightly used pieces that they regret it, hunt it down, and find that the dress they bought for 15,000 yen ten years prior is now 58,000 yen. What, in your opinion, is the rarest/most unobtainable print out there on the Lolita market?

I was browsing through Lolibrary for inspiration in red, and came across the Puppet Circus OP. I've heard horror stories from when it was first released, with mbok auctions hitting 100,000 yen for soy-sauce stained jsks, and the rare OP that floated across the Comm_sales scraping 800 USD a piece. I have never actually seen it on the Comm sales personally, and only once in person by freak chance. It has always been one of my favorite designs, albeit a complete pipe-dream. It's my 'The world is ending so might as well look like a million bucks when the asteroid hits' dress. DDC almost hit that level, but the re-releases have sort of done away with that problem. Puppet Circus now floats in infamy up there with Iron Gate in my mind.

Is yours a dream dress? Is it something you covet or a dress you revile and you can't understand why it's popular? What made it popular or scarce in your opinion? Was it popular from release day, or was it made famous well after it disappeared from the market? Has an offbrand print surprised you in its popularity?

Definitely this one for me, personally atleast. (Kitty starry night twinkle JSK in blue):

I have yet to see it resold, and I regret not buying it the first time around.

I also am saving up my money for (what I like to call, "The big 3 of AP") Day Dream Carnival, Sugary Carnival, and Milky Planet in navy.
8th-Oct-2013 11:52 pm (UTC)
I've never even seen this before! It's quite pretty though. It's kind of sad when good looking dresses fly under the radar. Moonlight Night did that for me, and now trying to hunt the JSK down is proving a challenge. I wish you luck. :(

i think all prints are obtainable, they all get resold at one point or another, the question is how often are the prints sold (esp. in the color and version you want)
and whether or not money is an issue.

like Myychiu, i was eyeing the Kitty Starry Night Twinkle JSK in blue as well, but once i realized it was sold out (and rather quickly), i gave up on it.
its one of those rare non-printed dresses that i absolutely loved.
i know innocent world doesnt do re-releases but the only dress i desperately want is lotta. i am weary of buying lotta secondhand because of how old it is, its likely not in too good of conditions.
well, to actually answer your question i would have to go with the metamorphosexnightmare before christmas collaboration.
9th-Oct-2013 01:17 am (UTC)
I feel you...By the time I found out it existed, in the next few days it was sold out.
That dress is so simple and elegant, and lace in all the right places.

I have lots of dream dresses/skirt, some they are sorta rare like BTSSB x Charmmy Kitty skirt in black or the Gloomy Bear stuff (the skirts and bags not the apron Jsk, it's cute but too costume-y)or the Creamy Mami AP collab (cutsew and hoodie). I noticed a thing on Mbok or Yahoo auctions.... i cannot find interesting Innocent World items because usually on Mbok and Yahoo Japan auctions there are few items and the stuff i could like is always very pricey like 20000 yen and more! Unfortunately (for my taste XD) brands like Milk and Emily Temple Cute are more popular, but i don't really like their stuff. Maybe in Japan IW isn't that popular, right??

I don't think there's much that's unobtainable, as long as you are willing to wait for it (sometimes a while) and pay for it.

My unicorn items were a little hard to find because they are old releases. I think what I like about them is they are old releases, since I am an old fogey lolita who got into the fashion before super sweet was popular.

It took time, but I have all 3 of my unicorns, and you can too!
- BtSSB Pockets Embroidery JSK in cream, original release
- BtSSB Marie Antoinette JSK in blue with matching purse
- AP Puppet Circus skirt in pink although I would still like to have the red =)

If I had to pick something else to start looking for it'd probably be JetJ's La Fee d'Une Fleur
9th-Oct-2013 01:13 am (UTC)
I love La Fee d'Une Fleur: to me it's like Cinderella and Tiana's ballgowns combined. But knowing that JetJ's measurements wouldn't work for me (size 1 is too small for my waist and size 2 is too baggy for my bust), I doubt I'd be able to wear it. *weeps in corner*

I think you should consider re-naming this post "Hardest to find prints out there". Just saying that I think it fits better.

Some prints I think are the hardest to find and/or are the priciest secondhand:

AatP: Poison de L'Amour, Vampire Requiem, Gloria ~Beautiful glassy Saint Mary~, Masquerade Theater, The End of Immortal Eden, Elizabeth Bride of Death and Dance of the Black Cats
AP: Milky Planet (both releases), Sugary Carnival (both releases), Cinema Doll, Chess Chocolate, Toy March, Holy Night Story, Star Night Theater, Dream Sky (both releases), Melty Chocolate and Dreamy Horoscope
Baby: Starry Sky of Mother Goose, Dripping Lace Rococo Accessories and Paris Window
IW: Royal Library and Embroidered Violin
Most garments from JetJ and MM
Moitie: Ruins Cathedrale and Silent Moon
9th-Oct-2013 02:43 am (UTC)
I believe that some of the items you mentioned are actually not too hard to obtain nowadays and also not as pricey as they once were.
Vampire Requiem in particular sells for quite a bit less than it used to and it is seen on the comm sales more frequently.

As for AP, Cat's Tea Party and Puppet Circus are definitely 'unicorn' prints in my opinion. Whereas Dream Sky, Melty Chocolate and Chess Chocolate are much easier to get, due to the re-releases.

Silent Moon & Ruins Cathedral are both recent pieces and aren't too expensive, you can still buy Ruins Cathedral from CD Japan. Iron Gate is still one of the most valuable and rarest lolita pieces. Many of the Christmas items are quite rare and cost more.

Lotta is another standout.

I think the truly rarest and most unobtainable dresses actually tend to be unassuming non-prints, old releases by Meta or JetJ or another classic brand. I know there have been some prints people have been looking for for YEARS and they just never ever come up. But when they do sell it's not for a lot, unlike PC and IG and the like. it's more like the people who bought them in the first place just hold on to them or maybe so few were released in the first place. And the demand for them is not very high, its like 1-2 people who REALLY want them. Unlike PC which a lot of people want, including me lol.

I'm always really impressed by bodyline pieces that end up being rare and commanding a high value. I don't have a problem with it or anything, its just unusual. I can't think of any examples but I know there are a few.

There are bodyline pieces that go for a high second-hand value? Really?! Which ones!
9th-Oct-2013 02:20 am (UTC)
All prints are relatively easy to find... I've seen Puppet Circus 4 - 5 times in the past two years. It just depends if you can pay.

Try unnamed, old, or printless things from brands, or things from indie brands. That's the unicorn.

Or Meta. Good luck finding Meta.

I believe you are quite right.

Finding the set, or the accessories to a dress/skirt can be very challenging, especially if it is an older piece. I have a plain Black x White Velvet Meta op from 2004, and to find the matching bonnet or head bow would be my unicorn piece. I have never seen it for sale or even a stock photo, only in a catalogue.
9th-Oct-2013 03:25 am (UTC)
I've seen quite a few rare prints on Mbok..recently too! I saw IW's Lotta Skirt in Nordic blue, it sold for 18,500 yen, I lost by only 500 yen ;_; I should've kept a closer eye on it.
The one that is my ULTIMATE dream dress is IW's Embroidered Violin JSK in Grey...I have never seen it be resold but they just restocked it on the webshop in black, so I'm considering getting it.
9th-Oct-2013 07:03 am (UTC)
Really?? Last time I saw Lotta in Ice Blue it went for 40, really is all about timing.
9th-Oct-2013 03:26 am (UTC)

I want this dress. I never see it. Well, I see the ribbon version once in awhile but this is one of the first dresses I fell in love with four years ago and it still isn't mine.

Also I think there are some older pieces on my wish list from baby, like she is sleeping, that don't show up often so I want them more.
9th-Oct-2013 09:58 am (UTC)
Very odd, because I clearly remember the Cherry Cherry Fallin' series going for half price three years ago. But maybe that's why one doesn't see it around on sale -- if people use it as an everyday dress since it went cheap and it wears...
9th-Oct-2013 03:52 am (UTC)
I've sold the black jsk for 800 and the red skirt for 330 on the comm sales. It's rare, but it's not really a unicorn....

eh, rare for me is things like Metamorphose chirimen princess JSK. It was released in 2005. I think I've only seen the white version sold once on y!J, but never the wine or black version. Another item that I can't seem to get is Victorian Maiden's old doll OP in pink, seen it once on mbok (in black) but not cream or pink or the rarest of all - yellow!
9th-Oct-2013 03:56 am (UTC)
** sold as in I sold the black Puppet Circus JSK for 800 and red Puppet Circus skirt for 330. I owned both for a while, and sold it to fund my other projects. Real life priorities unfortunately
9th-Oct-2013 04:09 am (UTC)
For me it's probably AP's Dollhouse jsk in grey x pink and AatP's C&C sandals

I've only seen the Dollhouse jsk sold in the pink x pink or grey x black colourways and never seen the shoes sold :(
9th-Oct-2013 10:47 am (UTC)
Now I haven't checked sales at all the last two years, but I bought the dollhouse jsk in greyxpink about two years ago, and while it took a bit of hauting, it wasn't really impossible at all. And I don't even check auctions, I'm sure it's quite easy to find there.
9th-Oct-2013 04:17 am (UTC)
My 'Unicorn' dress is the Maria Antonio OP from BTSSB. I've been searching for it for almost 4 years now and I've never had the chance to grab it. They did a re-release recently but it's different, I don't love it as much as the original. I think it's one of those dresses that I think there's not a lot of in the first place, and the ones that are out there, the owners want to keep them. I'm still on the hunt for my elusive unicorn, though, always and forever!
9th-Oct-2013 04:48 am (UTC)
I'm shocked that no one has mentioned Twinkle Mermaid. I once saw a used, faded dress go for $750 and I heard one sold for over $1000 on mbok, and this was back before charging more than the original price for an AP print was common. I still think it's gorgeous and I'm surprised that everyone seems to have forgotten about it. It's probably my favorite thing Angelic Pretty ever released.
9th-Oct-2013 05:07 am (UTC)
Yes, or Dreaming Macarons (although that didn't get quite that expensive did it?). Now I feel weirdly nostalgic.

I really want Cat's Tea Party but I'm afraid to even see what it's going for these days. There is a Meta print I love called American Dream; it features their rabbit mascot driving a Cadillac. The thing is I don't think I've even seen it for sale anywhere, I don't even know what colors it came in besides black. There are also some ETC duck prints I've been searching for one has ducklings playing instruments and the other is kind of similar to Meta's March of Duck. Also, old-school AP I would love to own the Angelica print in lavender or the Ballerina print in blue or pink. Finally, I don't think this last one is particularly rare or sought after but Powder Rose in yellow has gotten away from me at least 3 times so it's apparently elusive only to me.

9th-Oct-2013 05:15 am (UTC)
I've never even heard of American Dream, but I want to see it now. It sounds ADORABLE.
9th-Oct-2013 05:17 am (UTC)
Things that I haven't seen for sale in many many years.

Magical Etoile in SAX (specifically OP)

Melody Doll OP in White or Pink (And not missing pieces)

Carnival OP in bluexpink

Pastel a la mode polka dot OP

Ribbon Wool OP

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Carnival before! I love the dress and I want the original, but I'll never be able to shell out the money people usually demand for it. ;__;
9th-Oct-2013 05:31 am (UTC)
I have not once seen my dream dress ( scent of rapunzel in green) anywhere. I used to stalk auctions and eglcommsales everyday... But I've given up hope. I've seen the ivory and navy a few times but never the green ;(
9th-Oct-2013 05:53 am (UTC)
The bonnet in green is on Mbok, I believe. Maybe you could buy it in anticipation of your luck changing? :)
9th-Oct-2013 05:39 am (UTC)
The Nagi Noda/Mark Ryden Broken Label collaboration dresses. I missed out on them (on sale! fml!) years ago, and have never seen them since.
I've also never, in all of my years of looking, ever seen AP Standing Collar Cross OP. Unicorns, indeed!
9th-Oct-2013 06:07 am (UTC)
That standing collar cross op! I've seen it a handful of times but always in someone else's hands, alas.
9th-Oct-2013 06:05 am (UTC)
For me, it's Meta's nurse pieces. I stalk auctions obsessively but I've only managed to snag two sets out of the five original colorways that were released. They don't go for much but they just don't show up often! I'm surprised they don't turn up because they're so out of style, it seems like people would want to get rid of them, hahaha.
9th-Oct-2013 12:54 pm (UTC)
When other people mentioned old Meta being hard to find, the nurse pieces also came to mind! I sometimes wonder if some of those are so old they got too worn or damaged to sell, or were recycled into Halloween costumes. =(
9th-Oct-2013 07:10 am (UTC)
I think the most expensive pieces out of the brands I wear are Puppet Circus and Angelic Pretty x Disney collaboration Alice in Wonderland dress (I've only seen it listed once). Everything else that was on my dream list I thought I would never find or never be able to afford and I've managed to find everything within 6 months, MOST times without paying more than retail value. The exceptions were Baby x Disney collaboration in Ivory JSK, Toy Fantasy JSK in pink which is another pretty rare dress, and Melty Chocolate pink/white JSK which is not rare but can be expensive.

The most expensive dress I want right now is Toy March in wine, I let the last one I saw go for 26,000 cause I'm kinda broke but it's still only 2,000 over retail value so not too bad.
9th-Oct-2013 07:44 am (UTC)
For those who are interested in Puppet Circus, there is an auction right now for the red JSK.

My own unicorns... um, I have a few JetJ dresses that could be considered rare, I'm not sure? At least one of them I haven't seen anywhere else and isn't on Lolibrary. I tend to gravitate towards old, non-print pieces, so much of my wishlist is made up of "that one black dress JetJ had in 2005" or whatever. It also happens a lot where I come across some item I just missed out on buying or couldn't afford to get at the time, and it just sticks in my brain forever because I never, ever see it again.
9th-Oct-2013 03:38 pm (UTC)
Why must you toy with me like thiiiiiiis. ;;A;; 80,000 yen gghhghn-
9th-Oct-2013 08:42 am (UTC)
My unicorn print is definetely Gothic Arch from Moitie, it doesn't show up often and when it shows up it often is $800 for the JSK. Also JetJ goes for much these days, but finding them is not too hard.

Unicorn prints I wanted but obtained after long searching are Moitie's Iron Gate and Church Gate, Victorian Maiden's Noble Queen dress and Baby's Stained Glass OP in black. For all of them, I didn't pay too much over retail price. And for Iron Gate, I paid under retail price.
9th-Oct-2013 08:57 am (UTC)
i forgot about VM's Noble Queen! that is a wonderful dress.
9th-Oct-2013 11:44 am (UTC)
For me the two unicorn prints are Moi meme Moitie Gothic arch and Moi Meme Moitie iron gate.

I would love them so much but I have given up ever getting them given the ridiculous prices they go for nowadays.

However I have obtained one of my ultimate unicorn prints. MMM divine cross Sendai special edition in black and gold! I was so happy when I got hold of it as I thought that was impossible, lol.

Ugh, YES. I love the shirred JSK in navy. I saw it for sale once this year but I didn't have the money for it at the time.
9th-Oct-2013 02:14 pm (UTC)
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Sugary Carnival in cobalt and Melty Chocolapin!
9th-Oct-2013 03:55 pm (UTC)
I don't stalk the sales as much as I used to so I may just be missing it, but I have been searching for Fancy Melody jsk in black for years with no luck. It is my ultimate dream dress.
11th-Oct-2013 07:58 pm (UTC)
I actually bought mine from the sales comm last year (or the year before?) and since then I've seen it 2-3 times on mBok. Keep on stalking, you'll find it! :)
