Bodyline has put up a JeJ print
2nd-Apr-2013 05:25 pm
Bodyline has put up quite the dress on their website recently which has left me baffled.

I do wish it had some more black details in it like the bow, Butin either way it's still nice.

I seriously don't know what to think about it. If it was April 1st I'd think BL tries to prank on us, but this dress...
Well, JetJ is well-known for using classic pictures reproductions, but this (for me - disaster) is total clusterfuck.
Also, $80 for a polyester dress? I'd rather buy myself the fabrics and sew it myself than pay BL for something like this.

My second thought on it was "Oh, looks somehow like SurfaceSpell" but nope, it sadly doesn't.

Yeah I feel the same way about it. It's like they tried to jump on the busy art print trend but didn't exactly get it and just sort of picked some really trendy fabric from a JoAnn's remnant bin. Like, it doesn't have the decadence of the style, just sort of the elements all smashed together, and the colors are really just gross I think xD

$80 is way too much for this too I think. There are some Bodyline dresses that I can see paying $80 for (okay, maybe including the shipping), but they're usually really detailed. This isn't a bad dress, I have one of their very similarly designed dresses and it's honestly probably one of the highest quality Bodyline dresses I have. But this one is just uuugh too much going on for what it is.

I also sort of find the doofy little cheap bow on the front hilarious.

I'm personally really happy to see Bodyline branching out; I've always felt Bodyline was a little lacking in the classic/gothic department. Although to be honest I'm not mad about this print, because like you said it's lacking any black to tie in the bow- it's kind of like they've just shoved that black bow on there... I'm not terribly impressed by the price either, as I genuinely don't think it's worth the price- but I've always felt the same about the majority of JeJT prints too. I'd be interested to see them release a skirt with this print though!

I'm not a big fan of the dress/tights trend where items look like blender mush from any sort of distance. I think its possible to make a detailed all-over print that looks nicely textured from afar. This looks okay up close but the details are very pretty when all added together.

I think it's pretty cool and unique, and comments about the price amuse me because a lot of people here will throw down hundreds of dollars for a lacey, ruffley BTSSB thing.
2nd-Apr-2013 11:22 pm (UTC)
BtSSb quality is significantly higher than what bodyline makes. Also even if BtSSB literally made a sack covered in lace and bows that you put potatoes in, it would probably cost more in materials to make than a simple unadorned dress like this.

I don't really know if I like it, there just seems to be something missing. Maybe the design of the dress is too plain, there don't really seem to be any little details other than that bow that doesn't really match.

Although I do hope this means that bodyline are going to start doing a bit more classic along with sweet and gothic.

Amen on Bodyline branching out!
2nd-Apr-2013 11:19 pm (UTC)
To be honest, the whole kitschy JetJ look generally isn't my thing (though some people pull it off and look fantastic) and in a way I'm optimistic about bodyline trying it because there are some great artworks out there that they could totally use... but this looks like a one of those photo boxes that are supposed to look like they are victorian-scrap covered boxes. Fine for sitting on a shelf... but there is no focal point to make it work as a dress.
2nd-Apr-2013 11:25 pm (UTC)
Oh my gosh yes it does look like one of those boxes! If BL used almost any classical painting, even on such a plain dress as this, it would probably be amazing, as those tend to look best on plainer dresses, and I would probably be willing to pop down $80 for it. But in a case like that the print is supposed to be the big special thing about the print, which definitely isn't the case here, as it's just a showcase for trendy grandma art.
2nd-Apr-2013 11:32 pm (UTC)
I would totally wear it but without the little black bow and bolero... they are really out of place.
2nd-Apr-2013 11:34 pm (UTC)
While I adore classic art print dresses, this strikes me as really busy. I don't know though, the more I look at it the more I like it. It's a lot better than some of Bodyline's other recent releases, it looks like they tried to play it safe with this one.
2nd-Apr-2013 11:55 pm (UTC)
Well I must have beyond shitty taste because I think this dress is just beautiful. I do wish it had a bottom ruffle, but even without it I love how simplistic the design is, since anything else I think would have been way too busy with this print. And the print itself I also find really lovely. I'm mostly confused because I can't tell if the dress actually comes with the bolero or not. I would think no, but then it's pictured twice with it and it's listed under the OP section of the site rather than the JSK so I'm not entirely sure. If this dress were just a smidge cheaper I'd buy it in a heartbeat. At $80 it's something I have to think about since I don't really wear classic all too much and I don't know if I have anything other than solid black that would go with it, but it's on my wishlist for sure.
3rd-Apr-2013 12:10 am (UTC)
Usually when stuff includes more than one piece, they say so in the listing, right? (like, OP x 1, sleeves x 1, etc.) So I don't think that it comes with a bolero.

I'm not a huge fan of the dress but if you like it and want to wear it, I think you could pretty easily coordinate it with black, but you could also try another neutral like cream or white. You could also pull out some of the other shades in the print and try coordinating with them- colors like red, peach, or even a dusty purple could work to make something along these lines. I'm not sure what your normal style is or what else you have in your closet, but because the styling of the dress is so simple I think you could really play around with it a lot :)
3rd-Apr-2013 12:25 am (UTC)
I actually like it. I'd take off the bow, and wouldn't wear the bolero, but with the right blouse I think it could be nice.
3rd-Apr-2013 01:15 am (UTC)
I'm going against the other comments, but I like it. I see it in an outfit without the bow and bolero, and worn with a cream colored or black long sleeve chiffon blouse, and some sort of sheer simple patterned tights.
Planning on keeping an eye out for when it goes cheaper.
3rd-Apr-2013 01:16 am (UTC)
I actually really like it. While I wish there was a bit more to the construction of the dress I think the print makes up for it. I wouldn't wear it with the bolero as there really isn't enough black in the dress for it to really match. The bow is also kinda of oddly placed there. I hope it's detachable or easily removed.
I think I would need to see some reviews and worn pictures to consider actually buying it, as I kind of question the quality as this is the first time Bodyline has put out a dress like this.
I also think $80 is quite a lot for this dress so I may also wait for the price to be lowered.
3rd-Apr-2013 01:16 am (UTC)
That bow is strange. It would make more sense to me if it was larger and at the waist. And more black details, maybe some black ruffles at the hem, would be nice. I think someone could make a pretty decent coord out of it, though. Maybe with an underskirt or some DIY modifications. I would try it myself if it wasn't so expensive!
3rd-Apr-2013 02:04 am (UTC)
i like the print very much but i imagine this would be very hard to coordinate well .-.
3rd-Apr-2013 02:05 am (UTC)
It looks like a sun dress to me. That neckline is really unflattering for lolita.
3rd-Apr-2013 02:06 am (UTC)
It's a nice looking dress, but more trendy than lolita.
3rd-Apr-2013 02:15 am (UTC)
I like it, but I don't $80 like it.
3rd-Apr-2013 06:48 am (UTC)
Totally agree.
3rd-Apr-2013 05:01 am (UTC)
I'm SO buying this.
3rd-Apr-2013 06:42 am (UTC)
I personally don't like, but I am curious to see how people are going to coordinate it.
3rd-Apr-2013 06:54 am (UTC)
I don't really like it. It is nice to see that BL pays attention to lolita trends (even though it took them quite some time to catch up with this one) but the print is just so busy it looks messy to me. I'm fairly certain though that someone will be able to coordinate it well enough.
3rd-Apr-2013 08:31 am (UTC)
Wow, the print's actually pretty ( 0 3 0) I like the size of the things on the print, while the usual JetJ ones are HUGE! I do think the design's plain, but that can be fixed by coord with wool bolero (the example is fair enough, really :P), gold or pearl necklaces/jewelry :)

$80 is pricey for a polyester dress :
4th-Apr-2013 01:42 am (UTC)
I think it's because it comes with both the dress and bolero.
3rd-Apr-2013 08:39 am (UTC)
I like it! Not that I would wear it myself, but the 80 dollars on the english site is way overpriced If you would buy it in Yen , then the dress would be just 64 dollars. A good price for me :)
3rd-Apr-2013 12:32 pm (UTC)
I'm not fond of cherubs but if it wasn't for the cherubs I think I would have bought it, it looks pretty and I hope bodyline will make more dresses like this one! I like JetJ (even though I'm not fond of their cherubs and Jesus prints) and I'm glad it seems to be getting a cheaper alternative now.
3rd-Apr-2013 02:45 pm (UTC)
I really like it. If I was to buy this I wouldn't bother with the bolero (mostly because I hate wearing them) and I might remove the bow or I would make a plain black sash to tie in with the bow. But yeah I think this is actually pretty awesome, and I say this as someone who is pretty "meh" over the whole print dress trend.
Just needs a pretty poofy petti to show off the print to it's best advantage.

And can I also say I don't see what's so bad about the price/fabric? Plenty of brand dresses are made of polyester (to pick an entirely random example http://innocent-w.jp/shopping/131714/index_e.html) and people don't seem to think that over a $100 is too much for them...
3rd-Apr-2013 03:12 pm (UTC)
I'm not really one to complain about polyester, but I'd be willing to guess the polyester BL uses, vs what IW uses is totally different. I've bought a few "material: other" blouses from BL that were some polyester blend and they were honestly gross. Not sure if this is that "material: other" thing they used to say or just polyester, but I've been suspicious of BLs non cotton blends for years because of those blouses xD
3rd-Apr-2013 04:59 pm (UTC)
Something seems off about it to me. Honestly if I saw it in a high street store I'd probably pay like... £20 for it but nothing more. Though I've never really got into this whole' painting dress' trend.
3rd-Apr-2013 07:09 pm (UTC)
I know 'custom-made' print trend is a big craze in the mainstream fashion, but that for 20 quid in high street shops would be awesome and miraculous! XD
