What to buy for a Lolita?
4th-Dec-2012 05:51 am
As the general theme for December is already Gifts I can only hope my question is appropriate. My serious girlfriend is a Lolita. Do you have any gift ideas that a boyfriend could get for a Lolita, without giving her any kind of hint at all? I'd like it to be a complete surprise. So is there anything clever enough that almost any Lolita would like, and they probably don't already have? Money is not really an object, but I wouldn't want to make her feel the need to reciprocate by spending too much.

I know a little about her likes and interests, but obviously enough I can't share them here, as she could read this. But if you have any suggestions and suggestions on what sort of Lolita might like it, I would adore your help! <3

It would be really helpful if you could at least tell us what style she wears the most. Is it Classic, Sweet, Gothic, Punk? A nice idea is a pair of nice Brand lolita socks since you don't want to go overboard with the price. You could see what her favourite dress or skirt is and buy her a pair that matches that?
There are many gift ideas to propose but it really comes down to what style she wears.

She likes gothic, but I know she has plenty of other stuff. The trouble is, as a guy, something that "matches" is not something that I would do a very good job of.... lol.

Just take a look at what the main color of her favourite outfit or the color of most of her lolita clothes are and buy something the same color. If it is black (as in may gothic lolitas) it would be really easy to find something matching.

I am going to use IW as an example because it has lots of things and it is easy to buy from:

So for example you could get her a pair of solid colored socks or socks with a discrete motif

http://innocent-w.jp/shopping/124934/index_e.html

You could also look for a nice headbow or a bonnet

Also, you can always try some lolita jewelry that can be incorporated in many styles, like a necklace with pearls and bows or roses

If you can go a bit more expensive you could buy her a solid colored cape. It can be incorporated into many gothic and classic outfits

These are all fantastic! Thank you for the great links.

Seconding the above comment that her preferred style would be a big help. However, look at her wardrobe, is there anything she seems to be lacking? Like, does she need more head accessories? More jewelry? Or maybe she just needs another pair of socks, like the other commenter suggested. Is there a certain theme she likes? If so, you could try and buy items fitting that theme.
4th-Dec-2012 01:23 pm (UTC)
Accessories are a good bet. Necklaces, rings. Try to think of what dresses she has or what themes (like roses or bunnies) she favors
4th-Dec-2012 01:43 pm (UTC)
Well, I know she likes Gothic. But she has a ton of other stuff too.
4th-Dec-2012 01:52 pm (UTC)
you could try just getting her a Gothic Lolita Bible if she doesn't already collect them. Or as suggest above jewelry in her style.
4th-Dec-2012 01:53 pm (UTC)
I think I may have seen these before so she may already collect them. Thanks for the suggestions so far, more welcome! <3

Seconding the above comment and the last link, especially. I have a necklace of hers with more on the way, they are beautiful!
4th-Dec-2012 03:35 pm (UTC)
These are also awesome!
4th-Dec-2012 01:55 pm (UTC)
Does she have an Etsy? Check her favorites! That should give you not only ideas, but some choices.
4th-Dec-2012 02:04 pm (UTC)
Seconding this idea!
4th-Dec-2012 02:12 pm (UTC)
I've done some "research," but haven't had much luck. No etsy favorites, and most of her fandoms are very different from mine, so it's a bit of a challenge to know what to get.
4th-Dec-2012 01:56 pm (UTC)
Does she collect anything? I know many lolitas collect some cute items - like dolls, plushies, Care Bears, My little pony... or fashion magazines, fans, antique statuettes, tea cups... so maybe if she has some collection, to buy her another item she doesn't have yet would be a nice surprise!
4th-Dec-2012 02:45 pm (UTC)
She collects plenty, but I haven't seen all of any of her collections, so it's impossible to know what she doesn't have though... though I may have to look into this harder then! :) Thank you!
4th-Dec-2012 01:58 pm (UTC)
This is not a particularly 'lolita' gift, but a nice, high quality jewelry usually is a sure bet to make any girl happy. (think of a nice pearl necklace or a gold earrings etc). If she is a gothic you can try for dark colored pearls. The best thing is that it is versatile and can be worn in any occasion besides lolita coord. ^^

But that depends on your girl's personality, you know what she likes better than any of us here.
4th-Dec-2012 02:04 pm (UTC)
If your unsure about matching or what style she likes best or how abot jewelry or trinket bow for her to keep lolita assesories in.
4th-Dec-2012 02:12 pm (UTC)
Ask one of her friends if you are unsure. Its by far the best way to go. If she has friends whom she talks about lolita with then she has to know what she would like to get.
Good luck finding the perfect gift.
4th-Dec-2012 02:15 pm (UTC)
I am quite sure her friends would tip her off, otherwise I would :) Thank you!!! :)
5th-Dec-2012 10:29 am (UTC)
Ask her friends and tell them you want to keep it a total surprise. If they are honest and real friends they would help you get her a nice present and wouldn't tell her about it(at least not before you have given your gift)
4th-Dec-2012 02:25 pm (UTC)
It's not entirely clever, but maybe do her up a nice card that promises her maybe a skirt from her favourite brand [if that's in your price range] and then let her pick one. It sounds like you want to get her something she'll definitely like, and when it comes to gifts of clothes maybe reading a card that says "I'll buy you the skirt you want" isn't a nice as opening a nicely wrapped skirt, but it means your girlfriend does get what she wants, and not something you think she might want.
4th-Dec-2012 02:34 pm (UTC)
I like the idea, though I really want to focus on the "surprise." I'm lucky in that there's not really that much she wouldn't like... it would be great if I could think of something she liked so much that she would instantly leap across the table (metaphorically) and hug me. Which is partially why suggestions are awesome... going from something she will like to something she will love instantly shall be tricky. :) Thank you!
4th-Dec-2012 03:00 pm (UTC)
I may do multiple things...
Possibly these socks: http://www.japan-shops.com/rc/we70613/?act=c2&c=522&icode=5747#
And a black pearl necklace of a type yet to be determined
And either something for her collections or on her list of books to read.

Though I did read a little about Lucky Packs, and I'm wondering if there are any shops that sell something similar but for accessories instead. That would be a fantastic gift....
4th-Dec-2012 03:09 pm (UTC)
Also, here's a question... what would YOU want? Any suggestions on what might be the latest, newest release that YOU would want that's somewhere in the $40 to $150 price range?
4th-Dec-2012 05:47 pm (UTC)
Maybe a nice new lolita coat? I know I've been complaining to everyone how I don't have a nice lolita coat. Check out bodyline.co.jp for cute cheap coats specific for lolita. Or maybe you could find someone selling off a gently used brand coat?
4th-Dec-2012 05:54 pm (UTC)
Well, first off, I think she's super lucky to have a guy who is obviously putting a ton of thought into her birthday present; it shows you truly love and care for her!

As for what to get her... another option might be to think if she's every noted or complained about something in her wardrobe she really would like and is functional but does not have. An example would be I really want a pretty chiffon blouse that's on the fancy side for the summer and more intricate outfits. But it's hard to find the one I like.

So maybe there is an item like a specific color/style blouse/skirt/shoes/etc. that she's been looking into or complained about.
4th-Dec-2012 11:53 pm (UTC)
I see what you're doing there... :P

Anyway, rather than "mainstream" jewelry that can be worn with lolita, how about lolita jewelry that can be worn with mainstream (dressier?) outfits? Some of Baby's current pieces are pretty romantic:

Wrist cuffs, a new petticoat, and maybe a muff?

Thanks for all the help everyone! :)

Well My husband perfers I pick out my gifts amnd he buys whichever he likes or knows I love the most. This year he bought me my favorite style shoes which are a pair of Lolita Lola Wood Rocking Horse shoes. Have you thought of maybe a cute lolita purse.

If she is a gothic lolita, I'd recommend getting her something that she could use with multiple outfits, like socks. If you're willing to pay for international shipping, I'd recommend something from CDJapan, as they carry Moi-Meme-Moitie, which is the quintessential gothic brand. They carry a variety of socks. Maybe black with black lace, if you're unsure about her color preference? http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/apparel/list.html?genre_id=64003

If you want to buy something locally, I know there are stores offering brand merchandise in the USA, UK, France, Australia, and China.

Does your girlfriend like tea? If she does, maybe you could get her a nice tea set or some demi-tasse porcelaine tea cups?
4th-Dec-2012 09:16 pm (UTC)
Icing Sugar has quite a few pieces of jewellery that are versatile, and since they're not too specific in style they can mix and match quite easily. http://www.etsy.com/shop/IcingSugarLolita
4th-Dec-2012 09:23 pm (UTC)
How about a jewellry box? Get a nice fancy gothic one for her to put her accessories in?

As for lucky packs for jewellery there's these: http://egl-comm-sales.livejournal.com/20052403.html
But they are sweet. :S

You could get her a parasol umbrella! I found these great ones on Amazon that fold up small enough to fit in a purse, which are really convenient. I really hope my man buys me one someday, but he probably won't since I already have three full-sized parasols.

Off-white: http://www.amazon.com/Lisbeth-Dahl-Cream-Flounce-Umbrella/dp/B0046GMQ5Q/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=1WPJGAMMP79PO&coliid=I1CZJQGM335DDE

Black: http://www.amazon.com/Lisbeth-Dahl-Black-Flounce-Umbrella/dp/B0048DTTVQ/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=1WPJGAMMP79PO&coliid=I1TGUAOXXOBRLJ

If you want to buy her a brand item, Innocent World makes a similar one, too: http://innocent-w.jp/shopping/121903/index_e.html

I love the idea of a fancy jewelry/ trinket box. Or maybe a pretty music box?
6th-Dec-2012 04:52 am (UTC)
I second the Grimoire Tights. If you get a decent shopping service, you won't have to break your bank account acquiring them. They are a great Idea for any style except OTT sweet I guess. I have a friend who is not lolita and wear them casually too. She get plenty of compliments.

You could also try contacting them directly through email. They do ship overseas but do not take credit card or paypal. It has to be done by bank transfer.

a parasol, lace wristcuffs... those a pretty standard, desired items by lolitas of any style... just make sure to get them in a color that matches her clothes! (if she's into Gothic, then black is probably a safe bet)
10th-Dec-2012 08:55 am (UTC)
First off, this is really sweet of you!

Secondly, I've seen sites advertise gift cards, if you know she likes a certain brand then get her a gift card for that. If you don't know then perhaps casually ask her what brand her dress is when she is wearing it. Also take in what she's wearing, down to the accesories. If you do research online and take in what she is wearing maybe you can spot something she is lacking.

Hope this helps :)

That is one of the sweetest posts i have ever read. Thats so nice you are getting her something like lolita. Oh! But i would pay attention to what she looks at on the computer. Because if shes anything like me she probably stalks coord posts and stuff. So pay attention to what she likes in those. I would suggest getting her shoes, or accesories, because lolis tend to forget about those things that really tie the outfit together. If she has mostly sweet (Pink or pastel colors) then get her a bag or socks that have nice fruit or candy or toy motifs on them. If more gothic or classic (more dark colors like burgandy, black, or browns) I would get her things like a nice rose headpiece, or a violin motif bag. Pretty much just stalk what she stalks and pay attention to details.
17th-Dec-2012 02:32 am (UTC)
I forgot to add dont get her anything that looks covered in lace or made of shiny material. No black and white, and make sure that the clothes can be worn everyday. I would stay away from anything that has ears, or tails,or anything that looks like it should be in an anime. :D
