'Whoa! Bonnets look GOOD on me!' and other unexpected surprises
13th-Nov-2012 04:32 pm
'How could this OP be so comfy? The measurements say it should be really snug!'

'I look AWESOME in head-dresses!'

'This petticoat is enormous! ...I like it!'

'Holy cow, I look taller in tiered skirts!'

'I thought I hated wigs, how come this one suits my face so nicely?!'

Everyone has had a moment of pleasant surprise in this fashion, whether it be because a pastel wig suited your skin tone perfectly, or hit the jackpot on closet-child, or that first time you took a gamble in a brand new style. Why not share yours?

Mine came this morning when I tried on my first bonnet, after spending nearly three days perfecting the pattern, scraping together enough material for it, and sewing it together. After being told outright that my face was 'too fat' for them, I was more than a little anxious over making one at all. It just took one look in the mirror to blow me away, though. I looked ADORABLE. I LOVED IT. I couldn't stop staring at myself in the mirror. I had never had a piece of head-wear highlight my features so well. The rounded shape accentuated my cheeks and short hair, and disguised my chin. I was unbearably cute, and I didn't think I could have been to begin with.

My first bonnet, made of interfacing, curtains, and old bedsheets, was a total success, and I looked incredible in it. I took a gamble, and it was SO WORTH IT.

Ok, I'm done. Your turn!

I was surprised that these days I can pull off sweet lolita when I used to look really awkward in it. I now have several sweet loli items...

About wigs... I was also surprised that pink wigs matched my skintone, but I didn't buy it for lolita specifically...

I bleached my hair light blonde (black is my natural colour) and surprisingly everyone thinks I look like a doll with blonde hair... so that works with everyday lolita when I don't feel like wearing a wig all day.

Same thing for me, with my first bonnet, that looked good on me, I think. Which was very surprising since I don't have bangs.
The other thing that surprised me is that light blue suits me well, even if my skin looks yellowish...

(sorry, posted to the wrong place!! original post below D:)

light blue suits me as well, and I'm a yellow Asian! I think it might depend on what shade though.

I had the same experience with head eating bows!
I'm slowly figuring out how to balance them out with the rest of my outfit plus my wig/hairstyle but before that I thought there was no way I would wear one.

Awesome revelations:

1. JetJ's l'amour d'amants print isn't that awful blackish colour that you see on the official website?!

2. For that matter, JetJ has a size 2? Exactly my measurements ??!

3. I didn't know that I look really good in empire-styles dresses from lolita brands.

And the final one:

'What do you mean, some Mary Magdalene dresses have shirring???!' (I now own five and am on a personal crusade to collect more!)

That l'amour d'amants print was sold out on the first re-release by the time I found how glorious the actual thing was, but I got my hands on it in the end. I've also been buying tea-length and empire-style dresses all year, seriously overspending in the process. But even now I've yet to try wigs and contact lenses, so I can't say that I've been very adventurous -- and I look awful in a typical bonnet with glasses and no wig! ._.
14th-Nov-2012 02:21 am (UTC)
They do!? What peices have shirring?
14th-Nov-2012 01:50 am (UTC)
what an interesting post!

hmm, the ones offhand i thought of were negative (like, whoah i cannot pull off bonnets or platinum blonde XD) but! while i'm normally a sweet-classic kinda girl, my friend dressed me up in gothic and i was like uh-oh this is flippin fabulous! normal me, gothic me (no makeup tho) :3

You do look good in gothic! To me, however, dramatic eyeliner is one of the most fun things in gothic lolita (today I did mine like david bowie's in the labyrinth!), so you should try it some more, it can be so satisfying!

I had my moment recently when i dared to cut my hair. My hair has almost always been long to a length past my shoulders. Well, i started putting my hair back in a ponytail and after
analizing the look i cut my hait to a pixicut. My face is round so i was scared id look chubby (im already overwight anyway) but i took the chance and i cut it all off. It looks great with lolita too and is very cute with sweet like a vintage 40's lolita!
14th-Nov-2012 02:16 am (UTC)
Blue hair looks good with classic, too!

I live comfortably in the fact that if all else fails I always look good in a hat. Hats of basically any type just seem to suit me. So it's a case of 'Ugh can't be bothered doing my hair up where's my Boater/Cloche/Beret. There's a flipside though I look absolutely awful in lolita shoes the way the toes round upwards kind of make me look like Minnie Mouse....
14th-Nov-2012 04:03 am (UTC)
Hats -- I remember some mutual squeeing on the subject once! (but minnie mouse is cute...)
14th-Nov-2012 02:36 am (UTC)
Whoa this JSK has pockets.... I think everyone experiences this one!

I never thought I would find myelf in pink..... Im a black wearing type of girl

Im wearing make-up! I never wore make-up before wearing lolita.

$500 for a JSK, for that print, its so cheap...... Once you have been in the hobby for a little while you dont baulk at the prices so much

I fit into ETC????? Buying all the ETC now.

Im sure this is many more, but these were the first that came to mind!

For me it was A line petticoats. I use to only like cupcake petties and thought A line was kinda boring looking til I tried on my friends malcomodes and I fell in love. I never wear my cupcake shape petties anymore. Now i feel cupcake shape looks bad on me.
14th-Nov-2012 02:42 am (UTC)
I have been wanted to try bonnets too though.
14th-Nov-2012 02:51 am (UTC)
Scene: I'm joking around with a friend while window shopping on mbok.
"Haha, not buying anything unless I find... I don't know, a Baby blouse for $20? HAH. Like that will ever happen."
Two seconds later: "Oh, by the Angel..."
Long story short, finding a cute baby-doll BtSSB blouse for $19 on mbok and winning it for $19.

Hmmm... Oh! This is a good one.
I was buying a dress, and I was basically like, "Oh... Okay, most girls my height have dresses this length sit on their ribs and have the dresses about 3" over their knee... But I love it!" So I bought it, and... Waist fits exactly on my waist, skirt portion hits directly at my knees. I would like to thank my parents for these glorious proportions because it's been like this for every dress I own, unless they're baby-doll or purposefully super-duper high waisted. Still can't find jeans that fit though... (my legs are short as hecksies, and a medium torso with a high waist.)

I was the same way with bonnets. I never thought I would look good in them ever, but I tried on a friend's Triple Fortune bonnet (the one with the lace and flowers, ya'll know the one) and I really liked the way it looked on me! I haven't bought one yet, but it's really high up there on the wishlist.

I was also very surprised at what a difference false lashes made on my face, ESPECIALLY in photos. I'm still not used to putting them on, but it's worth the hassle :D
14th-Nov-2012 02:56 am (UTC)
Wait a minute if I alter that dress this way I can actually wear brand... Woo-hoo! Hey this dress has pockets I can carry my impractically small but coord completing purse without leaving anything important at home! Those ballet flats that I only bought because I needed a comfortable pair of shoes actually look really good with my loli. Pigtails are the antidote to bad hair days. This straw hat with little flowers on it does not make me look like an old lady.
14th-Nov-2012 03:05 am (UTC)
AHA moment: (in story form)
was at the ap store, and just for funsies i tried on the royal cards halter jsk. IT WAS TOO BIG FOR MY BOOBS (i am very busty, this doesn happen with anything, EVER) so i bought it on the spot.

sorry to be off topic, but could you please respond (to Sami) on facebook? thank you.

I was flipping through the white blouse rack at a local consignment shop when I saw a huge ruffley peter pan collar. I thought, "that looks loliable," so I pulled it out to take a look at it. I looked at the garment tag, and it said Peace Now. Shocked, I looked at the price tag and it said $9. In a state of disbelief, I looked at the garment tag again, and it still said Peace Now. After I finally convinced myself it was real, I rushed over to the cash register. I still have no idea how it got there. I never expected to find Brand for sale anywhere in my town. There are only 3 other lolitas in my town, and I know none of them sold it. It has slight underarm staining, but is in good shape otherwise.

I used to have moments of joy shopping in the used clothes/consignment shops in Japan all the time-- the ones that weren't lolita-oriented sometimes got lolita clothes and had no idea how to price them. Hello $10 brand cut-sews!

Also I think I look great in head-eating bows. I probably look insane to outsiders but my reflection pleases me when I wear one :p

My second comment but two words: Spare Buttons!
14th-Nov-2012 05:34 am (UTC)
Spare buttons are awesome.

At a convention earlier this year:

Oh, is that a black and gold Chantilly dress? That is to die for. If only it came in ivory and champagne gol- It does.

Oh, but my massive shoulders would never fit that tiny dress, they never do, I can only- It fits.

Huh... I'll take both!

I always found it a shock to see that AP, Bodyline, and Meta items look 10 x's better in real life than in stock photos.
14th-Nov-2012 09:08 am (UTC)

Plus, I've found it useless to have a wishlist anymore, because when I see it in person I have a totally different opinion of the dress. I've ended up buying things that I would have never even considered based on the picture alone.
14th-Nov-2012 07:31 am (UTC)
I'm quite small in the torso, so those moments when I've found things that have fit are always good since the reverse usually happens and I end up swimming in garments.

'Holy shit, the max measurements for this fixed sized dress are way bigger than mine, why does it actually fit/look good on me?!' - with AP's Dolce OP

I feel like I have a fairly good idea of what does and doesn't suit me as I've never been surprised by that.

In terms of awesome deals, the Meta Melody Note JSK I got for 2500 yen, Atelier Pierrot JSK for 4000 yen, and a Bodyline coat for 800 yen have been highlights.

"O wow. I look so cute in pink!" -When I bought Unico in Bloomland

"YAYYAYAYYAYAYAYYAYAY AP FITS ME!!!!!!!!" -When I bought and tried on Aqua Princess

"Ok. So I don't look nearly as ridiculous as I thought I would." -wearing a shiro outfit for the first time

"O.M.G.... there is another lolita in Charleston, SC" -After 2 long years, discovering another lolita that lives a short 20 mins away from me.
14th-Nov-2012 01:12 pm (UTC)
My most recent pleasant Lolita surprises were:
"Holy S*&^%$T! I can fit in Mary Magdalene!!!! O_O<3"

"Zomg, dress on wtb list for really awesome price even after SS fees + shipping!!"

and my favorite:
"Wow, I look really cute with blunt-cut bangs!" - This one is especially meaningful, because I avoided wearing bangs (fringe, to the Brits) for years and years after being forced to have them as a kid and looking really bad with them. Growing up and having your face fill out can do crazy things for the hairstyles you can wear!
17th-Nov-2012 04:13 am (UTC)
I had almost the exact same thing: grew up with bangs and hated them, then got them again as an adult and LOVE THEM.
14th-Nov-2012 01:18 pm (UTC)
When I took a leap and tried sweet lolita. Pastel blue doesn't wash me out, in fact it compliments my skin tone perfectly! ^_^
14th-Nov-2012 01:45 pm (UTC)
My brand OTKs stay up perfectly without sock glue! into an un-shirred AP dress? And...look good in candy-pink? (my only AP dress, an old A-line sailor dress)
Having a full-time job affords me to hand over my debit card to Innocent World!!!
14th-Nov-2012 05:02 pm (UTC)
I wish my OTKs would do that for me T_T
