Advice on buying from Victorian Trading Co
12th-Nov-2012 12:37 pm
Nothing
I saw a dress on Victorian Trading Co that I was thinking of purchasing. While Victorian Trading Co does ship overseas, I checked their international shipping rates and shipping alone for the dress to Singapore would be USD59.95 *_* Is this a standard rate for shipping a dress from USA to Singapore? The website didn't state what type of delivery service is being used, eg. USPS, FedEx etc

Would like to ask if there's any USA shopping service that could possibly ship the dress for a lower rate, through USPS Priority Mail International maybe (or would that be just as pricey?). Thanks!

Edit: I just checked and standard domestic shipping in USA would come up to USD19.95 already...ouch.

Honestly, if they're shipping it via a tracked method that price is pretty standard. Earlier in the year, the postal system raised their rates and if you're looking to buy a full-length dress or one made of a heavier fabric (which I am assuming is the case based on the fact that domestic shipment alone is $20! Usually I can get away with paying $5-$10 for domestic shipments of lolita items), $50-$60 to cover the cost of packing and materials, while certainly expensive, is what you could reasonably expect to pay if you're ordering anything from over here and looking for tracked shipment- even if you're not going through UPS, FedEx, or DHL. Sorry :c

It's actually a cotton dress with a chiffon overlay that I'm looking at, lol! I have heard international shipping rates in USA can be expensive but at USD59.95 for a cotton/chiffon dress, I took a figurative step back mentally when I checked the shipping rate. Thank you for the information anyway! I guess I just have to weigh (pun, lol) how much I really want the dress...

Victorian Trading Co price-gouges the heck out of their shipping rates. I payed $9 shipping for something that cost them $3 to ship. (The actual shipping cost was on the label when I got the package.) Shipping to Singapore might actually cost that much if it's tracked, but they aren't using tracking. It says on their website they use international parcel post, which is one of the cheapest shipping options. I checked the USPS website, and assuming that your dress weights 3 lb, it should cost around $40 USD to ship via International Priority Mail. Your best option would be to find some who lives near Lenexa, Kansas and can go to their physical store and buy it for you. If you want, you can play with shipping rates here:

Yikes!! Not even tracked and the shipping is that much at USD59.95. At least USD40 sounds more reasonable. I do like the dress but I really dislike a company that scalps on shipping rates =_=" I shall exercise my option not to purchase from them then, thank you for helping to check on the shipping prices!

it seems like a lot of what they sell is just items from other manufactures/brands (with a significant markup!). maybe if you reverse image search on google or something, you might find another site that sells the same dress and might have cheaper shipping?

Yeah, my boyfriend and I are into neo-victoriana and steampunk, we always tell people to avoid VTC because they're so hit or miss and so expensive. A lot of their stuff is just straight up high street clothing at double retail.

I did see that a lot of their dresses are from Nataya which you can get from other online shops. Unfortunately the dress I want is stated as a Victorian Trading Co. exclusive which I take it to mean it can only be bought from them. I did try doing a search for the dress I wanted on google and nada, lol. Thanks anyway for the suggestion!

Hi fellow Singaporean! Anyway, I'm currently studying in the USA but I go back to SG at least twice a year and if you still want to exercise your option to purchase from them I really don't mind bringing it back in my luggage. :D my next trip home is CNY though... Might be a bit late.

I'll confirm on the shipping price gouging. :( I think I paid $15 for something that only cost $6ish to get to my place. I was a bit grumpy.

Hi fellow countryman! Thanks very much your kind offer! USD20 for domestic shipping is something I can still bear to part with, lol. I'll decide on whether to exercise my option to purchase from the company and let you know =) If I do decide to buy the dress, I'll PM you through LJ? Thanks again!

Of course! I'm sure they allow a different shipping address so you can just put the shipping address to mine so all I gotta do is pick it up and check it. :> Send me a PM whenever! :D
