The Rocking Horse Shoe Guide Update!
4th-Mar-2009 03:16 pm
Marby drawn Kyra

Update 27/1/10:

After a dozen ‘The Gothic and Lolita Bible’s site is down!!!’ comment notifications I reckoned it might well be time to update the RHS guide!
Please let me know if there are any mistakes or anything else you want to add.

You can find this guide in the memories for future reference

Thanks :3

P.S I’m also not bothering to make much of a distinction between ‘true rocking horses’ any more and including all shoes with a chunky wooden platform. I’ve missed out two DD styles that are pseudo RHS but since you can’t buy them any more it doesn’t really matter!

‘Real’ RHS have a cut out at the back and a sloped platform so you can ‘rock’ this makes the heavy platform lighter and easier to walk in.

I've compiled this list from various sources. All pictures are stored on my own photobucket, although if you own rights to the photo and want me to take it down please say. I've listed prices in the currency it sells for rather than USD because of fluctuating exchange rates. Use to work it out :)

Also to mention when I say 'leather strap' I mean leather style strap. The straps will be made from the same material as the uppers

Prices correct as of 4/3/09 unless stated otherwise

Vivienne Westwood Rocking Horse shoes

The original, the sought after and the cream of the crop of rocking horse shoes! Momoko in Kamikaze girls deems them "absolutely essential for full Lolitahood" and lies to her father to afford them XD

They come in no less than six styles from London:

Rocking Horse Baby (Mary Jane)

Slave sandal

Cross strap

There are other Japan only styles such as the

And these ones that are similar the RHS Babys but have a sling strap.

I’ve also seen different ones in Fruits.

Soles are wooden with real leather uppers. They come in a huge range of colours as can be seen from the various pictures. Apparently the normal colours are black, red, white, brown and blue. Other rare colours not pictured include lime green and fuchsia

Sizes are UK true to size although a little narrow. All reviews I've found suggest sticking to your normal shoe size as being leather you can wear them in a bit too.

I believe shoe sizing is approximately UK4/US6/EU36, UK5/US7/EU37 but as this is not a wholly accurate conversion please check first!

Pricing varies with style and colour. some are £270 (GBP) the gold are £295 I believe they’re even more than this now ^^;;; anyone confirm?

The only place you can buy them from is the World's End shop in London, or in Japan. No other VW shop stocks them. You can however, ring the World's End shop and order from aboard providing you know the size and style. This takes approximately 9-10 weeks to make. I know that they do not make the baby (maryjane) strap RH in red or the golf shoes in black and white (only black and natural) but you can have them custom make them for you if you ask nicely. Shipping is £25

The shoes are made to order but sometimes be bought and tried on in the shop.

Vivienne Westwood World’s End Shop
430 King's Road, Chelsea
London, SW10 0LR

(+44) 20 7352 6551

You can also sometimes find them on Ebay

or on Y!Japan, The Old Bailey (Closet Child), or I Love Brand Although the Japanese ones are always much higher in price.

There is a Mellissa collaboration ‘rocking horse shoe’
But its application in Lolita is dubious! These cost £120

The closest you're going to get to these are from

Gothic & Lolita Bible (not to be confused with the actual magazine)

They also make golf shoes

Edit! Site works fine for me but her ebay is

Soles are wooden, uppers are either oxhide leather, kid leather, or synthetic leather. The Oxhide are black only, the kid leather comes in red, white or metallic purple (indigo). The synthetic ones can be made in a range of colours

Golf shoes can be made in all the synthetic colours including red and white and black and white and come in patent red and metallic pink (peach red) for the kid leather versions.

Sizing is in EU sizes (Can anyone tell me if they run true to size?)

Prices are 829 Yuan (RMB) for synthetic and 1169 Yuan for real leather.

The next closest are

Synthetic ballerinas

Real leather ballerinas

Golf shoes

They come in ballerina and golf styles, in leather (golf and ballerina) and synthetic.
Ballerinas are sold in Black, white and red in synthetic with leather (style) straps, black and red for leather with ribbon straps, and black, white, red and pink for leather with leather straps (group order only of 20+ from 69th Department store). Golf shoes come in black and black and white and boots in black only. The wood sole is varnished

Sizing in EU sizes up to 42 in most sizes

They can be bought from

The 69th Department Store, nana_jun, One Day in Paradise from Lolita Lola by MSN ( or sometimes by miwitch

Prices incl shipping from 69th Department are $100 (USD) for synthetic ballerinas, $105 for golfs, $115 for leather with ribbon strap, $130 for boots Prices updated but still from 2008

Next up on the wooden soles are

Double Decker

Double Decker has recently retired a lot of its old styles and also introduced black wood and some new styles. AFAIK Shipping problems/delays have been resolved.

Light wood:

Ballerina (ribbon strap)

Ballerina (leather strap) New! Only available in black

Golf/Kilt Retired! You can’t buy this style from Double Decker any more although there are a few pairs left in the ‘outlet’ section of the website

Lace-up boot (Ribbon)

Lace-up boot (shoelaces) Retired! You can’t buy this style from Double Decker anymore!

Shoe Retired! You can’t buy this style from Double Decker anymore!

Sandal Retired! You can’t buy this style from Double Decker anymore!

Buckle Strap New! Only available in black and white
Black wood:

Multi strap New! Black only

Sandal New! Black only!

Gladiator Retired! You can’t buy this style from Double Decker any more although there are a few pairs left in the ‘outlet’ section of the website

They are soft and unvarnished wood soles with synthetic uppers. Varnishing the wood is recommended to stop them splintering in wet weather. Sizing is from 23 to 25 cms. Update from the comments: “You can get doubledecker-RHs in any size you want. (I ordered some in 26,5cm) Just ask them about your size, and they'll do it”
Due to the toe shape they can be a bit narrow on some people and pinch the toes of wide feet.

You can buy them directly from Double Decker for $100 (USD) for two pairs (or 10,000 yen if you're in Japan). Sometimes they have free shipping offers too. Colours are pink, black and white.

-EDIT- According to double decker's blog you can custom order wood soled shoes in whatever colour you like now! It will take a lot longer though

You might be able to find these in IRL shops as well. The Camden market shop 'Pink Fluffy' used to stock them under their own label so someone is selling these wholesale someplace

An*ten*na (Old)

The holy grail of rocking horse shoes! An*ten*na used to make the bubble toed RHS which appeared in the film version of Kamikaze Girls

I list these purely for posterity because you cannot buy them anymore ;_;

Varnished wood soles/synthetic uppers

An*ten*na (New/Secret Shop)

An*ten*na brought out some new pseudo-RHs which you can buy from them used to be able to buy from them or (naughty naughty) for cheaper under the Secret Shop label.

I say pseudo because they lack the cut out back. Still nice though!

They have a foam sole and synthetic upper

available in brown, black and white and multi (card trump)
and cream, red, brown and black (bow)

Lolita Shoes I call it this because the Taobao site I found them on is called something like ‘The famous Japanese lolita punk discount shoes’ XD

Bow Strap

Lace Up

Foam soles and synthetic uppers
168RMB a pair (Chinese only)
You can also buy them from but from all reviews I wouldn’t recommend buying anything from there – you have been warned!

GLP (Gothic Lolita Punk)

Another Chinese manufacturer - not so great for clothes but fine for shoes!

Punk RHS

(available in red, black and white)

You can buy them from IRL stores such as the GLP shop in Camden, from the taobao store (western union and bank transfer, paypal coming) and from ebay.

Corsage rocking horses

Black, white 22.5-24.5

wood with synthetic uppers. Yosuke sizing is a bit off. treesdancealone is normally a 24.5 and had to get 23.5

Old style – see above for replicas

though personally I wouldn't wear them this is a perfectly detailed guide, should also put people's reviews on them =D
4th-Mar-2009 07:42 pm (UTC)
I can do that if people supply them.

I've linked back to the original post that contains reviews, and it's also quite easy to find them if you search :)
4th-Mar-2009 07:45 pm (UTC)
What a flawless guide! Thank you for explaining them so clearly and showing us their origin! Although I knew they were first made by VW, I didn't know any of the details. xD;
4th-Mar-2009 07:51 pm (UTC)
You're welcome!
4th-Mar-2009 07:45 pm (UTC)
Now if only any of these were made in my size~~
4th-Mar-2009 07:51 pm (UTC)
4th-Mar-2009 07:47 pm (UTC)
this is a great guide!

4th-Mar-2009 07:50 pm (UTC)
Welcome! :D
4th-Mar-2009 07:48 pm (UTC)
Thank you for the guide!
I can't wait to buy myself a pair ;3;
4th-Mar-2009 07:51 pm (UTC)
Ha ha which pair though?
4th-Mar-2009 07:55 pm (UTC)
Thanks! This guide is great! I've been wanting to buy a pair myself for a while and I'm debating with wood vs foam. ^^;;
If you don't mind me adding, you can also buy lolita_lolas from nana_jun and at One Day in Paradise ( And yikyu1991716 sells montreals in all the styles I think.

4th-Mar-2009 09:42 pm (UTC)
added, thanks!
4th-Mar-2009 07:58 pm (UTC)
Added to favorites!
Brilliant! Thank you very much!
4th-Mar-2009 08:00 pm (UTC)
it would be nice if in the chart they were all in the same currency maybe for a quick guide? or original currency column and same currency column ^^;
4th-Mar-2009 08:12 pm (UTC)
It's one click with google to convert it into your own currency (for instance, in Firefox, typing "829 RMB in USD").
If she were to have a "same currency" column, it wouldn't always be totally accurate (because of fluctuating exchange rates) and it would also be biased towards girls in whatever country (that of the currency).
4th-Mar-2009 08:03 pm (UTC)
I wish a place made silver ones D8 I guess I'll have to spraypaint my DD ones... xD

Thanks for this guide though~ 8D BUT EUH THOSE HORRIBLE SNAKESKIN BOOTS DX
4th-Mar-2009 09:24 pm (UTC)
Well if VW make gold ones maybe they do silver too? :D

4th-Mar-2009 08:09 pm (UTC)
Fantastic! However, for the sake of use large-footed gals, I have to ask if [if you're ever bored or feel like adding to this] you could include the highest size range of each one in that gorgeous chart you made! I think it would be very helpful, but please don't go to any extra trouble!

This is really amazing! Thank you so much for taking all the time and effort!
4th-Mar-2009 09:26 pm (UTC)
That's probably a good idea! There's lots of mistakes on the chart (like microsoft squiggly lines and the fact I left out the other RC styles) so I'll change it later and upload a new picture

Thanks for the suggestion!
4th-Mar-2009 08:18 pm (UTC)
wow thank you so much! <3
I'm gonna add this to my memories XD
4th-Mar-2009 08:30 pm (UTC)
wowww, thanks for this!
maybe you could also include the heel height? i know for me it's rather important. afaik most are around 8cm, except an*ten*na which are higher and montreal which are lower.
4th-Mar-2009 09:27 pm (UTC)
I was thinking that but I don't know the height. I thought An*ten*na were 8cms or 8.5 but I didn't know the rest

maybe I should put another post out asking people to measure their shoes!
4th-Mar-2009 08:32 pm (UTC)
A good thing to mention about the Yosuke is that the sizing is a bit off. I normally wear a 24.5 and in the Yosuke I had to get a 23.5.
4th-Mar-2009 09:40 pm (UTC)
added, thanks!
4th-Mar-2009 08:49 pm (UTC)
What a fantastic guide! Thanks so much for compiling this. :)
4th-Mar-2009 08:57 pm (UTC)
Would these: be considered the VW cross strap?
4th-Mar-2009 09:29 pm (UTC)
Ahh looks like it doesn't it! It's certainly a different style - Thanks!
4th-Mar-2009 09:02 pm (UTC)
very nice guide. :] DAMN, those VW ones...!!!

4th-Mar-2009 09:05 pm (UTC)
I saw another rocking horse style boot from another company while I was in Japan last week. I'll see if I remembered to take a pic of it. Red or white only, lace up with a boxpleat ruffle...I think they also were sold at Marui One as well but I can't recall. I saw them in a shoe store in Harajuku that often sells the same brands as the Shinkjuku Marui One store.

excellent work though :)
4th-Mar-2009 09:40 pm (UTC)
If you can find a picture and a shop name i'll be happy to add it :)
4th-Mar-2009 09:17 pm (UTC)
Oh wow this is such an amazing and comprehensive guide- thank you so much :D!
The only that mystery that remains to me is how to tie them up "properly" WITHOUT squeezing my legs to death.
4th-Mar-2009 09:30 pm (UTC)
Sock glue I think is the only way. And having leather strap ones you can tie rather than the lolita_lola velcro (there must only be one girl in a million that's a perfect fit for that!)
4th-Mar-2009 09:39 pm (UTC)
Oh i must go to World's End and try on the V.W ones~ but £270 is a bit.....expensive....but i guess it's worth it`
Thanks for the guide!
4th-Mar-2009 10:05 pm (UTC)
Great guide, Ty!
I would like to know, if it can be added, as to how the shoes run.
if they run, narrow or wide.
4th-Mar-2009 10:19 pm (UTC)
Sorry, just realized you did put the different types of leather down ^^;

Nice guide :)
4th-Mar-2009 10:32 pm (UTC)
I wanted to tell you that you dont have to do a shopping service for the VW at worlds end. You can call right up and order them as long as you know the size and style . They take 9-10 weeks to make. I know that they do not make the baby (maryjane) strap RH in red or the golf shoes in black and white (only black and natural) but you can have them custom make them for you if you ask nicely.
Also diff styles have diff prices. the ballerina ones migth be 270 but the gold shoes are 295.
4th-Mar-2009 10:34 pm (UTC)
btw shipping is 25 pounds.
4th-Mar-2009 10:33 pm (UTC)
I believe all of Rose Chocolat's shoes were $108 (boots were a bit more), though I don't know if that pricing will be the same if/when they reopen. : /
4th-Mar-2009 10:56 pm (UTC)
4th-Mar-2009 11:20 pm (UTC)
Thanks for this! I'm definitely interested in buying a pair of rocking horse shoes, and this will greatly help me when I have the money all together. :)
5th-Mar-2009 12:55 am (UTC)
I wanted to point out that DD doesn't have the boots in 25cm (I think all sizes actually, but I'm not 100% sure) and won't restock them.
